The Sum of All Fears

The popular assumption that people fear death the most is very logical especially when one imagines that death is lights out – the ultimate end of everything. Surveys show however that death ranks 10th in the list which is is quite surprising. Perhaps there are other things so disdainful and horrifying than death itself ! Fear is therefore more equated with the notion horror and suffering more than loss of life itself.

Top 10 Fears

1.Arachnophobia – fear of spiders
2.Sociophobia – fear of people or social situations
3. Aerophobia – fear of flying
4. Agoraphobia – fear of open spaces
5.Claustrophia – fear of confined places
6.Emetophobia – fear of vomiting
7.Acrophobia – fear of heights
8.Cancerphobia – fear of cancer
9. Brontophobia – fear of thunder and lightning
10.Necrophobia – fear of death

Fear is normal for a person but “when it is not justified by the presence of real danger or threat, or by any rational cause, and when it is also accompanied by a systematic avoidance of the situations which lead to it, then we have what is called a phobia“. Phobia being an unfounded fear is tantamount to a psychological disorder. Interestingly, the human mind is susceptibleΒ to a multitude of documented phobias, several hundreds of them, the list ranging from the mundane to the ridiculous and others I could say, atrocious.

From the list, here’s what I found extremely interesting :

Arachibutyrophobia – Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth ( just when I thought peanut butter is so damn harmless)
Cibophobia or Sitophobia or Sitiophobia – Fear of food ( now this man regrets to be alive)
Coitophobia – Fear of coitus ( hmmm… a priest ?)
Decidophobia – Fear of making decisions ( fear of growing up ?)
Dutchphobia – Fear of the Dutch (strange but I know a person who fears Dutch treat and never pays his share 😦 )
Eisoptrophobia – Fear of mirrors or of seeing oneself in a mirror ( lol.. would this be akin to fear of ugliness?)
Epistemophobia – Fear of knowledge ( saving your parents some education money)
Euphobia. – Fear of hearing good news ( the eternal pessimist)
Eurotophobia – Fear of female genitalia ( definitely not me hehe)
Levophobia – Fear of things to the left side of the body ( I guess being right-handed isn’t enough)
Medorthophobia – Fear of an erect penis ( delusional everytime he wakes up in the morning)
Novercaphobia – Fear of your step-mother ( about time they leigitimized this phobia !)
Optophobia – Fear of opening one’s eyes ( being blind really rocks, man)
Syngenesophobia – Fear of relatives ( please, stay away from me guys)
Panophobia or Pantophobia – Fear of everythingΒ Β  ( this is itΒ  ! THE SUM OF ALL FEARS )

Now if there is one “beneficial” phobia that can be invented and put to instant action in a government setting it would be :

Kurakotphobia – Fear of corruption 😎

JUST PLAIN CRUEL

The news of actor Heath Leger’s passing rocked the world. After all, Heath was a terrific actor and he might have been a bit disturbed by family problems but everyone thought he could pull out of it but he didn’t. He died a sudden death and toxicology tests are being done to establish the cause. Foul play had been ruled out. Now here’s one news that really made me irate, with smoke coming out of my ears 😑 A church group plans to picket Leger’s funeral because he played a homosexual role in the movie Brokeback Mountain 😑 What do you gain by this cruel and bigoted action ? Leave the man alone and let him die with dignity. For godsakes the man is dead and a movie is a movie and such show triumphalism and hatred are not reflective of the teachings of Christ πŸ‘Ώ I don’t think Christ if he was alive would ever protest in a funeral, for any sinner for that matter .

  1. Haha… kakatawa yung fear of peanut butter. πŸ™‚ Over naman yung magp-picket kay Heath Ledger… probably professional picketers.

  2. So strange ! I think I have a few of them in that list πŸ™‚ Fear of dancing is so silly hehe.

  3. Toe – I was expecting fear of peanut allergies hehe πŸ™‚

Man, these picketers are venting their ire on dead person – it’s pathetic πŸ‘Ώ

  4. Irrealis – I got a few of them on the list too.
I also have fear of dancing but only in front of the public hehe πŸ™‚

  5. eurotophobic. that’s definitely ME! hahahah πŸ˜€

  6. interesting! lol…i don’t have Medortophobia! I guess it’s a good sight. hahahaha.

hmmmm…mga sira ulo ang mag picket. Why are there so many morons out there? They really believe the movies huh?

    May Heth rest in peace!

  7. asuuusssss ang mga self-righteous! as if sila ang linis-linis nila…and duh! twas a role…sheesh…

Anyway okay yung fear of peanut butter ah..at talagang specific “sticking to the roof of the mouth” ayos! hehe

  8. On that day itself, I was bombarded with news that stocks fell all over the world and there was a so-called mass hysteria of the next great depression stage in USA coming soon. But the news that shocked me most is Heath Ledger’s death.

For someone who’s very popular, handsome, rich and larger than life, dying is somewhat or really unexpected.

  9. “Panophobia or Pantophobia – Fear of everything ( this is it ! THE SUM OF ALL FEARS )”

Naku, mabuti pang magbigti na lang. hahaha!

  10. Fear of female private parts? Now, thats a fear I dont have either! BRING IT ON!!! LOL

  11. Death is on the number 1 spot for me.
All the remaining fears look like jokes (except cancer) compare to death.

  12. What’s with the peanut butter thing. That’s crazy! haha But Panophobia takes the cave.

Hmmm how about blogophobia? Fear of blogging. hehe

  13. Nell – hahaha πŸ™‚ In other words you have Heterophobia – fear of the opposite sex !

  14. Ipanema – you said “i don’t have Medortophobia! I guess it’s a good sight.”

    AMEN πŸ™‚

  15. Verns – methinks even if Leth was gay those folks protesting over a dead person are IMHO mentally deranged 😑

Are you a penut butter lover ? I am πŸ™‚ BTW, the footsteps look cool in your blog πŸ˜‰

  16. Jeff – the threat of a U.S. recession is big time here and being someone who works for an
American company operating in Canada I am concerned too but if they give me a 2 year salary package I’ll leave tomorrow hehe πŸ™‚

Leger’s passing at the prime of his career is very unfortunate but it underscores the reality that fame and fortune doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness and contentment.

  17. Rhodora – agree having the “sum of all fears” phobia means the person regrets being born and there’s no reason to be alive ! This person would be the perfect candidate for being “born again” hehe πŸ™‚

  18. Trench – hahaha πŸ™‚ Can you imagine there is also Venustraphobia – fear of beautiful women?

BTW I like your blue eyed pitbull and read your post about it. A relative of mine has that
    too πŸ™‚

  19. Sidney – I am in the same page as you – worry about the big lights out and dismiss all others as nuisance of life πŸ™‚

Having said so, my wife who has phobia of rats will kill me if I try to bring a hamster into the house hehe πŸ™‚

  20. Ferdz – lol.. I’ll be curious about the symptoms of fear of blogging hehe πŸ™‚ To think that there
are approximately 500 recognized phobias is kinda mindboggling isn’t it πŸ™‚

  21. but I do have claustrophobia. i think i got over it TEMPORARILY when I had an MRI. eh mahal [10k] so tiniis kung di matakot. Otherwise, they will redo and that’s how much? sos. pobreng alindahaw man ko dong. πŸ™‚

I thought I couldn’t breath inside. It’s too tiny but they calmed me down while I was in. May music and I thought of living than dying. πŸ™‚

but nowadays, i still can’t stand confined places. 😦

  22. I think I have a minor case of claustrophobia. Coitophobia, on the other hand, is not on my vocabulary. Hehe

  23. i have ipisphobia. hehehe.

fear of food? so nakadextrose lang siya?

and re sa service ni heath, bad naman sila. feeling ko nga si God nandun sa service niya e. and malay mo siya pa nasa heaven. hindi sila

  24. I think I am still quite sane. I dont have any phobia from your list. But maybe in the rest of the list, I do.

  25. Ipanema – that MRI contraption does look a little eerie and for 10K you need to suppress your phobia hehe πŸ™‚

I have a bit of phobia with heights. Until now I don’t have the guts to bungee jump πŸ™‚

  26. Panaderos – same here, we may even have an addiction hahaha πŸ™‚ I think people with coitophobia are missing a lot πŸ˜‰

  27. Tin – unfortunately Pinas does look like ipis kingdom hehe πŸ™‚ Looks like everywhere we go in Pinas it is a permanent fixture. Even the condos along Greenbelt smell with Baygon every time the housekeeping folks finish their daily routine 😐

I couldn’t imagine anyone fearing food – mayble those with anorexia trying hard to become thin πŸ™‚

BTW I hope you’re enjoying your new job πŸ˜›

  28. Leah – I think we all do have a bit of phobia in the list although I am surprised at the ones that are extreme like Apeirophobia – fear of infinity πŸ™‚ I don’t have any clue of its symptoms hehe πŸ™‚

  29. Lights out, then nothingness… I guess that alone sums up my fears.

And to those picketing Heath’s funeral, now that’s what I call kicking a man when he’s already down and out… pathetic.

  30. Snglguy – all the other phobias are sort of manifestations of our human frailty but the big kahuna is the lights out and that’s what we should fear the most.

It is pathetic to beat up on a dead person I agree.. talk about fair play, kicking someone who can’t fight back 😑

  31. My kids have “cleanophobia!”

Homophobia for those poor un-nurtured brained folks who plan to picket the funeral of an actor who played a gay role on the screen.
May their genitalias ache everytime they open their mouths!!

  32. Noypetes – as for kids, what else is new – they all suffer from the same phobia hehe πŸ™‚

LOL, I wish πŸ™‚ Those picketers have nothing else to do- what do you gain by beating up on a dead horse πŸ‘Ώ

  33. medorthopobia — this one is hilarious. hahaha. thank heavens i don’t have it (i mean, the fear) ;P

  34. Pantophobia pala. akala ko pantyphobia, malabo na yata ang mata ko. LOL

  35. Barry – it would have been a disaster if you had that phobia bro πŸ™‚ It would be a drag every morning you wake up πŸ˜†

  36. Here’s something interesting:

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia β€” fear of the number 666.

    That’s a mouthful!

  37. Myepinoy – pantyphobia would be a real downer won’t it πŸ˜›

  38. Abaniko – hahaha.. unfortunately the 666 is in the bible but whoever has this fear has gone too scared with “THE OMEN” movie/s πŸ™‚

  39. hahahaha…it looks like a tiny tunnel and i thought, i can’t fit into that. it’s too small. i was thinking i couldn’t breathe. that’s always my fear. and yes, for 10k pesoses, i have to suppress my fear, pwede pala yun! hahahaha. so that’s why i said temporarily. 😦

    i can’t go bunjee jumping, i have hypertension. i can only watch…in horror! πŸ™‚

  40. Mukang engot yung classmate ko. Ngayun pa natakot sa dugo… ayaw nang maghandle ng delivery.

  41. So Big Bro…is your real name Buff Wings? hahahaha sorry, read Toe’s reply to your comment in her latest entry..utoy-utoy takun ya kadlaw haha πŸ˜‰

  42. Ipanema – I have long been wanting to try sky diving and experience the thrill… but I guess I need to pass the bungee jump first πŸ˜›

  43. Mon – that’s totally ironic ! Wait to be a medical pro and fear the sight of blood .. quite embarrasing 😐

  44. Verns – that would be a disaster won’t it ? πŸ˜†

My mom told me many years ago that a townmate named her son the same name as mine but not quite the same spelling. It read like a name of a drug πŸ™‚ It’s the first time I heard of my name being butchered hehe πŸ™‚

I’m not named Rumpelstilstkin πŸ™‚ but I bet my house no one can ever guess my real name coz I’m the only one in the world who has it haha

  45. “Arachibutyrophobia – Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth” — Hahaha! (I actually hate it every time this happens to me. I don’t have fear about the whole thing, though.)

How do you call the fear of frogs? (I’m totally afraid of them.)

    *****

Hay…those church people. What a bunch of self-righteous church goers. I don’t think God is pleased with their spiritual arrogance.

    *****

Hi, BW! Here’s wishing you and your family a blessed 2008. Better late than never. πŸ™‚

  46. Jayred – best wishes for the new year to you too ! I gather your back in Switzerland by now. Hope you had a great Xmas vacation in good old Pinas πŸ™‚

Yes, you have a legit phobia – Ranidaphobia- Fear of frogs hahaha πŸ˜†
