The Name Game

We all hear about grotesque and exotic names every now and then and Pinoys aren’t strangers to the bizzare habit of people giving unique names to their children. I am not sure what the motivation is other than wanting their child to be a standout, decidedly different from the rest of the crowd but sure enough it has become a global phenomenon. Decades from now, people’s nationalities are no longer identifiable by the names they carry. A Pinoy naming his kid a Nordic or Slavic name is still considered mainstream but what about those who select names that are so wacky and unorthodox that you can’t even figure out whatΒ to call the person ?

Talking about real wacky names just recently a 57 year old man legally changed his name to In God We Trust, as an affirmation of his religious faith. His first name is now In God and his last name is We Trust. Hmmm, what if friends call him ” In God, In God.. let’s have couple of beers at the pub “. Now, has he made people use God’s name in vain? Methinks he had done his god a disservice more than honor 😦 Alright, alright just kidding – the man doesn’t drink –Β  ( he better not ) πŸ™‚ And he better not piss people off too … that’s a ton of bullsh** In God..Β oops..now that’s sacrilegeous ! 😳 He’s 57 but if he were to have children , how is he going to name his kid? What kind of first name jibes with the last name We Trust?

Here’s some extremely bizzare names.

Trout Fishing In America – the new name of Peter Eastman, who changed his name in 1994 to declare is passion for trout fishing

Yahoo, Mexican -boy born in 2007. Named because his parents met in a Yahoo! chat

Creedence Clearwater Couto , a Brazilian football player named after a well-known American music band Creedence_Clearwater_Revival

Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F’tang-F’tang-OlΓ©-Biscuitbarrel . British political candidate self-renamed after a Monty Python character. Born John Desmond Lewis.

Kentucky Fried Cruelty.com – A PETA (People_for_the_Ethical_Treatment_of_Animals) staff member who was known as Chris Garnett before he changed his name Name in 2006.

Savior God Scientist Allah – is the name of a 16-month old infant who died after falling from a seventh story window on April 20, 2006

Incidentally Pinoy politician Joker Arroyo and Jame Cardinal Sin are also on the list. Do you know of any strange names ?

WACKY STREET/PLACES NAMES

Here’s a few :

  • The intersection of Clinton and Fidelity in Houston ( what an oxymoron)
  • Farfrompoopen Road in Tennessee (the only road up to Constipation Ridge
  • Psycho Path in Traverse City, Mich ( perhaps a few lights down to the mental hospital)
  • Lucifer St., Toronto ( hope my pastor doesn’t live there)
  • Sexmoan, Pampanga ( can hear moans all the way from Olongapo and Angeles City). Seriously, how did this place get its name?

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

Tom Cruise should hire this kid to play the theme song of Mission Impossible. Watching this kid play is mission impossible feat – for me that is 😯

  1. It boggles me how parents can name their child after their whim of fancy without taking into consideration the later consequences for the child. I have a very common name but growing up I was not totally into the name my parents gave me, what more those bizarre names parents conjure up nowadays.

BTW, I love my bff very much but her kids are named MILKO AND CHOCO. Of course that’s their nicknames, but still I thought that was wacky and totally out of character. I have never even in my wildest dreams imagined her to name her kids these. Now, I thought that’s cute, but let’s wait and see what the boys will think next.

Is this post coming after watching NAMESAKE (Gogol Ganguli?).

    Have a good weekend, BW.

  2. Those names are wacky, especially the race horses ! hahaha πŸ™‚

Wow, the kid is a guitar prodigy. Such a talent !

  3. hahaha @ horses names!

  4. Hahaha, I remember seeing those Sexmoan, Pampanga sign in those north-bound buses years ago. These days, they changed it to Sasmuan, or Sasmoan. πŸ˜€

Re dirty horse names, has anybody used Cunning Linguist yet? πŸ˜€

  5. During my teenage years I used to change all my barkadas nickname w/c is very common. Ang hirap kasi magpa-impress sa mga girls nuon pag mabantot ang name mo. Until now they still using that name I’ve given them and they were forever grateful to me. Well my 2 sons has a unique name na walang katulad siguro sa buong mundo. YSAIAH YVES YSRAEL and YLIJAH YORK YARDLEY

  6. Worked with a guy years ago named Richard Long. For obvious reasons, he decided that the better nickname to use was Rich. πŸ˜€

Mike Hunt and Dick Hertz are other names that should be avoided. πŸ™‚

That kid’s pretty good. We might be looking at a future Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton there. Cool! πŸ™‚

  7. hahaha… i also noticed that some children aready have three first names (with second and third – LOL). so far i haven’t encountered weird names yet but looking at your list it’s simply “funny but real”.

  8. Really queer name. In our jurisdiction, those names wouldn’t be approved since they could be deceiving and sounds puny and farcical.

I’d surely be confused with them names that I wouldn’t call them at all except mister or miss. πŸ™‚

  9. This is 100% patok!

Cracked me up early in the morning.

  10. Here’s one name, my own uncle:
Angel (first name) San Pedro (last name)

I kid u nut, I mean not (don’t ban me, k? he he)
this uncle of mine is the most soft spoken, always ready to help, and never would never complain! candidate for sainthood? ha ha!

your horse names cracked me up!

and that guitar kid- WICKED! wow! was that a kid or a small adult guy?

  11. Ewok – know what, my parents are guilty of that too. I have a very unique name and acquaintances are surprised when they come to know my real name πŸ™‚

LOL.. those kiddie names normally fade out when the child grows older.. Remember Ricky Belmonte’s ( hmm… not i’m not too sure now) son named Wowie? I bet you he’d drop that name when he gets to junior high πŸ™‚ I know one boy who was named Pretzel and not sure if he still carries the name 😐

Nope, I still have to watch that movie. Learned it’s quite hilarious πŸ™‚

  12. Irrealis – that’s just the bunch that I liked out of the big list hehe πŸ™‚ Yep, he’s definitelty a prodigy !

  13. Mari – which is your favorite horse ? πŸ˜†

  14. Sngl – really? Did they change the name now? The town became famous worldwide because of its name ! Oh, well, we never run out of sanctimonious pricks in the government, don’t we? πŸ˜†

Hahaha.. Cunning Lunguist – that’s a dandy

  15. Ysrael – an alias is always better when your name is mabantot lol.. If you’re Juan Maglakad, you can also be Johnny Walker, why not ? hahaha πŸ™‚ Wow, your children’s same sure smells sweet ! I smell a couple of scents in their names πŸ™‚

  16. Panaderos – lol on Dick Hertz. First time I’m hearing this hehehe πŸ™‚ No offense but if your name is Malou Wang and you’re Pinoy, you’re probably totally ignorant of Tagalog πŸ™‚

This Korean kid in my opinion will exceed the talent of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Mind you he’s only 10 and just look at his interpretation. Awesome !

  17. Dong – hehe. THe names are real wacky aren’t they? Arabs have names that sound like all first names because their custom is to name their kid with a given name, the father’s name and the grandfathers name. It’s really a man’s world out there, ain’t it ? πŸ™‚ An alternative method is a given name and the tribal name as surname.

  18. Major Tom – I doubt if our Pinas courts would approve if I request to change my name to Bayang Magiliw although it’s extremely patriotic .. LOL πŸ™‚

  19. MyePinoy – my pleasure bro πŸ™‚

  20. Thess – looks your uncle would be a saint indeed hehe πŸ™‚ Which is your pick for the race ? πŸ˜†

This Korean kid is only 10 mind you and within a few years we should see him cut records or play in concerts. Definitely more talent than Earl Klugh with his interpretations and he could play Bon Jovi
( Living on a Prayer) and Toto ( Africa) songs ! Absolutely wicked 😎

  21. And here I thought that the names I’ve heard are weird. There was this girl in high school whose name was Sisa Sasi. There was a boy in my class at college whose last name was Panti. Who would want to be Mrs. Panti, huh? πŸ™‚ And I’ve heard that one of the popular names parents are naming their kids now is Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards.

    That kid’s really talented!

  22. but maybe one of the weirdest names comes from the thai people. i used to connect with a thai from our sister company in thailand. his name is prasit phenomkate. there are many weirded names. weird for us but definitely not for them.

  23. There used to be a basketball player named God Shamgod. Not sure where he is now.

I’ve seen that kid all over youtube, but avoided playing his videos until now. I know i’d get really jealous of his skills. hehe

  24. Niceheart – I used to have a high school schoolmate whose last name was Ligid-ligid. There’s really gross surnames in Pinas like Cobeta, Jakul ( Mindanao) and the worst would be some girl from Ilocos whose first name was Sylvia Cant*tan πŸ™‚ I mean she wouldn’t venture going to a Tagalog speaking region of the country ever I would think 😯 I bet you she probably got married early and if she had brothers – poor creatures 😦

  25. Dong – yep, Thai names are very long ! I heard of a Thai who name was Suphot Vorathorn πŸ™‚

  26. Wil – Afro-American names are quite stylish like athletes Voshon Leonard, Latrel Sprewell, Keyshawn Johnson..

LOL.. me too.. I pity myself when I see this 10 year old kid play the guitar like a maestro but you know what, he’s a work of art so it truly appreciate his talent πŸ™‚

  27. ang galing nung bata!

and yung In God we trust na name, pinayagan siya ng court? he doesn’t honor God kaya with that name

  28. Hilarious commentary on that horse race.

Weird names, there should be a list of names you are not allowed to use. Imagine if you change your name to F*&k? Worse if you are chinese and last name would be Mi or Yu. Ha!ha!

  29. This is true. Juana Bayag filed a petition to change her name because she said she has always been a laughing stock on her school years. She is now known as Joan Bayag.

  30. Tin – he’s awesome, isn’t he? πŸ™‚ Too much freedom here. Some people screw themselves us in the process by giving themselves such outrageous names, duh 😦

  31. Leah – hahaha that will be the disaster ! Now one would dare mention your name πŸ˜† Well, you should have seen the store named FCUK floating around the malls here hehe πŸ™‚

  32. Lawstude – she was more concerned of sounding cool with the first name rather than getting of a stinky last name hehe πŸ™‚ Looks like Titirio Bayagbag has no hopes of changing to Cocky Balls either πŸ™‚

  33. I once had a classmate who’s last name is Panti.

You can imagine the taunts we gave him. =)

  34. Jeff – lol.. that’s one name that will cause you grief with your peers, esp at school πŸ™‚

  35. the most peculiar name that I have personally encountered was of a patient, the name was “Coming Soon.” It was the whole First name, i dont remember his surname though. But what was really odd about the guy was even though he looked really straight, all his visitors were transvestites. as in level 5 gays. with the dyed hair and gaudy make ups.

  36. If I can change my name, I will use Buhawi.

  37. funny. just recently i met a man named Chrysler. first thing i asked him how many are they in the family. he sensed what i’m thinking–he has a brother named Dodge πŸ˜›

  38. Mon – level 5 gays? – that’s hilarious hahaha πŸ™‚ I bet you one of the parents of that guy must have been a movie addict πŸ™‚

Buhawi – now that’s a real Pinoy name much like Bayani hehe πŸ™‚

  39. Paetetechie – hopefully, Chrysler’s last name wasnt Ford ! LOL πŸ™‚
