Post Christmas Blues

santa_after_boxOnce the all the Christmas parties are over and done with, a respite from the rather strenuous holiday comes in form of a brief lull until the New Year’s celebration. The house is in a bit of disarray – garbage bags of boxes and gift wrap paper need to be recycled, fridge smacking full of left over food, car oil change schedule missed, and darn we worry about our diet which had been deferred until the season is over. It’s time to get back to routine things that were postponed all because of Christmas. There’s a sense of relief that big day is over but then there’s the anxiety on the ton-load of things to do 😯

When you think that the day after Christmas you can loaf around, it is not the case in this country. Dec 26th is Boxing Day, a statutory holiday and this is not to say that we spend the whole day watching boxing matches on TV – I wish we did 🙂 Boxing day is the day when prices of goods fall off from the cliff, a much anticipated day for people to shop and haggle with stores especially for big ticket items. It is a rather hectic day for some when they have to queue up early morning hours for the appliance stores to open before the stock runs out. If your wallet got burned with Christmas, it’ll be charred by Boxing Day if you’re not careful. Having said so, I did buy my large screen HDTV on a Boxing Day and boy it was a real sweet deal. This time, I’ve opted not to visit a store on Boxing Day. The bad news is Boxing Day prices last until New Year’s day. 😦

santaOne FM radio station here plays the yuletide carols ad free all day on Christmas Day since carols are are slowly taken off the air after Dec 25th. Maybe it’s just me but have you noticed the sudden surge of big name artists cutting Christmas albums lately? I don’t mind listening to Hall and Oates singing Jingle Bell Rock but James Taylor singing Santa Claus Is Coming to Town is kind of odd. He sounds like a drunken octogenarian peeing in the bushes, murmuring to the goblins to duck his pee. Michael Bolton singing White Christmas grunting and frowning like tacks are piercing his butt can cause depression to the weak hearted. Absolutely no comparison to the original Bing Crosby version. I was a bit shocked to hear Willie Nelson sing O Little Town of Bethlehem. It’s a rather solemn song fitting a church choir setting and Willie’s country style, mousy sounding pitch didn’t quite do justice to the song. Like it or not – time to say bye bye to the carols. Not in Pinas though. Last time I came home for vacation – the last week of Jan, the Little Drummer Boy was still playing his drums at the NAIA airport speakers 🙂

imagesMaking apology is noble but only if it is absolutely essential. Cory Aquino pulled a booboo when she apologized to deposed plunderer Joseph Estrada for helping in his ouster. I sympathize with Cory’s predicament, that she is terribly ill and wanting to mend ties with everyone she had a wrangle with but when you are a public figure, you have to wary of the consequences of your actions. You need to put the country ahead of your personal sentiments. Cory should have privately apologized to Erap if she really wanted to do so.  A public apology is a colossal blunder for it not only vindicates Erap to the eyes of many die hard supporters but made a total mockery out of Edsa II. Cory went on later to say that her apology was done in jest but really, who is she kidding ?

Now this really convinces me that politicians are merely taking the people for a ride. It is always the case of defeated parties seeking to overthrow the president as expediently as they can , to have their own president installed. A case of severe impatience? Or perhaps 6 years is too long. Does everything – sunrise and sunset -depend entirely on the President ? Perhaps Philippine president just wields too much executive power and if so, something has to be done about this through constitutional reform.  This makes me think that the single 6 year presidential term without re-election looks like a one way street to plunder city. Re-election makes presidents work for a second term while a single term doesn’t require any redemptive effort for a second term so why worry about performance? Steal as much as you can before you leave the office ! It does sound like it’s preventing another Marcos dictatorship stunt but to the boys club, it’s simply giving everybody a chance to get his turn. 👿 In the meantime, these assholes keep on shoving the impeachment pitch to everyone’s butt when all they really want is to install their man so they can take the reins because dammit, Gloria overstayed 😡 The squabble is really about the boys jockeying for power while the people are simply gullible spectators being goaded to bring their placards to the street to make things happen faster. Gloria may fall but whoever replaces her would be the same beast clad in a different costume 👿

  1. Boxing day is just businesses’ way of projecting an acceptable “year graph” to its shareholders. Not to mention another way of squeezing out hard earned dollars from consumers.

Cory’s blunder only give weight to a joke: Corazon (pointing to the heart) C. (spanish for “yes”) Aqui (spanish for “here” while pointing to the head) No!

  2. Traditional Christmas songs are a sure hit so everyone wants to make money. However there are very few artists who compose original Christmas songs. I’d like to see KISS come up with a Christmas album 🙂

  3. I think one other reason as to why the likes of JT, Michael Bolton and Hall & Oates are recording Christmas tunes is that they’re all getting OLD. 😀

The six-year term in our Constitution is one of the provisions I strongly disagree with. I believe it was simply an overreaction to the Marcos years. I still prefer allowing Presidents to serve a maximum of two four-year terms. Our country hasn’t really improved much ever since that Constitution was enacted.

As for Cory Aquino, I don’t if she still has full command of her mental faculties. I don’t mean to be nasty but her apology to Mr. Buffoon was a very ill-advised move, a blunder that will certainly be remembered long after she’s gone.

  4. I’m dead tired too. I’m off until New Year. Did you buy anything for Boxing Day?

Funny 🙂 I don’t know James Taylor that much. I only know him from my dad who mentioned about him. Looks like his album sucked !

  5. very true!sometimes i even feel like it’s my working day after the celebration, because at home i am often tasked to clean the mess. di naman ako nga lang ala kami katulong kaya no choice ako!hehe!

    Happy New Year!God bless!:)

  6. Blogusvox – looks like the merchants are desperately moving their inventory even at a reduced profit . Having less stuff at the warehouse with lesser profit is better than having too much with no profit 😯

As with Cory, I guess the proverbial quote holds true – you can only catch the fish by its mouth ” 🙂

  7. Natez1 – true. Michael Jackson’s original Give Love on Christmas Day comes to mind. It became a real big holiday hit.

I look forward to KISS’ Xmas album too hehe 😉

  8. Panaderos – that’s probably one reason why they’re cutting the holiday albums – they’re oldies hehe 🙂

It is an overreaction it seems and what really pisses me off is the coup d’etat is now everybody’s recipe for booting out the president 😦 We would be seeing presidents installed via coups rather than elections duh 😡

  9. Irrealis – nope, I stayed away from the stores. I’m really tempted to buy the Olympus E410 DSLR which goes with a standard and zoom lens – all for $379. Now they’re only selling it only through the web ! darn.

Have a listen to James Taylor’s Xmas album hehe.. and you’ll know what I mean 😆

  10. NYL – same here… I had to queue up for 2 hours at a Pinoy restaurant to take home our orders ugh.. and had to vacuum the whole house teh day after coz it was too messy – what an ordeal 🙂

  11. We don’t have boxing day here but with the looming financial crisis, I bet the stores and malls will be staging their own year-round sales just to stay afloat the coming year…

I can’t imagine listening to JT singing Christmas Carols. Truth is, may binanagayan lang talaga ang carols.

As for dear old Cory, people are disgusted already. That apology showed that birds of the same feather do flock together… I wonder if they’ll get hit with Avian Flu…. 😀

    • Sngl – the post Xmas sale here is so tempting that in truth, you’d be better off buying NOW if you really need it 🙂

JT’s style isn’t really apt for Xmas carols and Willie Nelson is even worse. There are however artists who tried to compose original Xmas songs like the Beatles, Barry Manilow and Michael Jackson and I thought it fit their style.. as for Michael Bolton…. hehe.. grimacing on a Xmas carol rendition is truly odd for me at least 😯

Cory affirmed that the politician’s agenda cannot be trusted, even in such a noble endeavor as EDSA II. ugh 😦

  12. I didn’t have much hullaballoo this Christmas, mine is on New Year’s so I can’t get any rest yet. Still stir crazy over preps for the luncheon, which I am hosting this year.

Oh I know, there was a good deal on a 52″ hdtv that hubby wanted to buy after Xmas but while we have the money to spend we dont have the place to put it yet.

Hope to find the same deal when we have a place ready to house a bigger tv.

Have a good and quiet New Year celebration.

    • Ewok – situations reversed – for me, New Years will be a little tamer 🙂 We will be spending new years at a friend’s house and all we would be bringing is a plate of food and dessert and a bottle of wine ! It’s his turn to have his house in disarray 😉

Buy the TV now and worry about the space later ! hehe 🙂

Have fun with your party… Happy New Year to you and your hubs 🙂

  13. Cory did that??? A big HAAAYYYY.

So, you finally got yourself a HDTV. 🙂 Good for you!

On Boxing Day, my husband and I had a literal boxing day with the outlaws (LOL).

Happy New Year, BW and family! Here’s wishing you all of God’s best in 2009!

    • Jayred – you bet she did. Despicable isn’t it? 😦

I got my large screen HDTV a while back.. and had to change my satellite receiver and DVD player. Talk about forklifting my system to a new platform. I have 2 more TV’s to do. Good they’re smaller hehe 😉

Happy New Year to you too and all the best for 2009 !

  14. “Not in Pinas though. Last time I came home for vacation – the last week of Jan, the Little Drummer Boy was still playing his drums at the NAIA airport speakers”>>> hehehe… true. lakas ng post-christmas syndrome.

with regards to cory’s apology, i was dismayed. i think things or statements like that can’t be taken as a humor.

    • Dong – hehe.. we Pinoys don’t want Xmas to leave don’t we ? 😉

Cory can say she did it in jest but Erap took her statement at face value. It was just disgusting. Parang ginawang kalokohan lang ang EDSA II. 😦

  15. happy new year bw! a blessed one to come for you. as for that apology, antayin na lang natin baka masabugan din sila ng paputok this new year.

  16. i agree, long vacations has its cons also and one of them is the loads of work waiting when you come back.

anyways, happy new year my friend and i really enjoyed and appreciated the returns and visits to each others’ blogs in 2008. cheers for more in 2009!!!

  17. Nalito ulit si Erap, akala yata totoo and statement ni Cory. Anything for the poor masses to read in their daily newspapers, just something to talk about in beauty/barber shops, drinkers on the streets, banketa, etc…opposite poles becomes disconnect and here comes the stabbings and shootings – sad way of life sometimes, hehe…

Heck, funny thing is majority are happy and can listen to christmas songs any day of the months not just December and January. Way to go.

Happy New Year to you and all your commenters!

  18. Prinsesa – hahaha.. hopefully firecrakers lang at hindi tunay na putok 🙂

Happry New year to you too and all the best for the new year 🙂

  19. Lawstude – thanks for your friendship too bro. 🙂 Have a wonderful new year’s celebration and all the best to you in 2009 !

  20. TrueBlue – true, it’s nice to have a controversy every now and then and boy, wouldn’t the press and the networks just love it ? 😉

Happy new year to you too and thanks for all your visits. Wish you all the best in 2009 🙂

  21. bakit di ka magshoshopping ngayon?

at talagang cory incident na ang next post mo ha. hehe.

    happy new year 🙂

  22. Tin – you bet, hindi rin ako nakatiis kahit madami akong natanggap na regalo, kasi until Jan31 yung boxing day prices here hehe. So I bought a pretty cool compact palm sized digital ” buddy-buddy” camera I’ve been wanting to have 🙂

Happy New Year to you too… hope you had a blast 😆

  23. LOL about James Taylor peeing in the bushes. Taylor is actually not bad singing “Baby, Its Cold Outside” with Natalie Cole. 🙂

  24. bw! happy belated christmas and happy new year! i wish you and your family the best this year! welcome 2009! 🙂

  25. Wil – JT’s voice can never leave its imprint of the 70’s- a folk singer who emerged during the LSD era. He did some duets with Carole King and Carly Simon too.. 🙂

  26. Piapot – same to you.. Hope you had a wonderful New Year’s celebration and may all your wishes come true in 2009 🙂
