Playing The Odds

lottery_winnerPictures of people – individuals, families, office workers proudly showing their million dollar checks in lottery winnings make us green with envy whispering to ourselves – “darn, I wish it was me” . Truth is, our minds are clouded by the million dollar bonanza, thinking “if they could win, I could win too “. Bloody right, but in this lottery game, luck is the only game in town. There is no such thing as some numbers having more probability of winning over others. In fact, every number has equal chance of winning so 1,2,3,4,5,6 will have an equal chance as 12,4,42,10,22,36 in a 6/49 lottery (6 out of 49 numbers).

What are the odds in winning the lotto ? Here’s it is :

Lotto 6/49 (6 out of 49 numbers) : 1 in 13,983,816

Super7 (7 out of 49 numbers) : 1 in 62,891,499

Now, since the Super 7 only costs $1 per ticket as opposed to $2 for the Lotto 6/49, you load up on the cheaper Super7 thinking you have more chances of winning. Not quite. Both are rip offs but you are slightly better off with sticking to the $2 tickets if you are playing the odds for a win.

Here’s a glimpse of how ludicrous these lotto odds are :

You have about a 1 in 2,000,000 chance of being struck by lightning.

A pregnant woman has a 1 in 705,000 chance of giving birth to quadruplets.

Someone eating an oyster has a 1 in 12,000 chance of finding a pearl inside of it.

Dream on. Good luck. 🙂

Here’s a line that really makes me irate ” I don’t like to go for physical exam because I’m scared to know that I have a serious illness “.

I’m more incensed with the fact that health care in this country is free, as in zero, nada, zilch ; translated – you have no excuse not to go for the exam. I’m wondering if some people think they’re superhuman or just merely playing caveman, entrusting everthing to their genes for survival. The funny thing is these people take their cars for regular preventive maintenance checks because they hate the idea of their cars breaking down. I wonder what gives them the idea that their bodies are much stronger than aluminum and steel.

I’ll be very cynical now, but this is the kind of thinking that truly drags the person down to trouble city. This is where you separate the normal and the schizophrenic mind 😦 If one abrogates the responsibilty of taking care of his body, his life because of some unfounded fear, I seriously suggest a visit to the psychiatrist. True, the life expectancy of people in this country is one of the highest in the world and that’s not because of the air we breath – it is because people take time to care of their health. Grow up – this is no time for playing scared with the childish witches and demons game. Physical exams are there to make you live longer. Play the odds right.

MOVIE REVIEW : Passchendaele

200px-passchendaeleI happened to get hold of the DVD of the movie Passchendaele before it’s official release 😉 I did a review on the movie but didn’t want to include it in this post because of its length. I created a new page for it entitled “MOVIE REVIEW”. When you get to my home page, you will see the the button above the graphics header. I also have a link on my left sidebar for it. If you want to get there now, click here.

In a nutshell, here’s my 2 liner on what this movie is about, an excerpt from my review :

“Man, would you go to war just to save you future brother in law from getting killed ? Unless you’ve ingested some form of kryptonite and really think you’re Superman ,I doubt it.”

Which do you think has the much tougher driving job ? The Formula I, NASCAR or the Car Rally driver? Well, check this one out and ye be judge 🙂

Just plain awesome ! 🙂

  1. I really don’t want to gamble my money. OMG, I’m scared of doctors too.

Luv your review of Passhendaele. It made me laugh 🙂

    • Irrealis – you better stick to NOT gambling partner 🙂 I look at the doc as kind of a mechanic and it helps – and if I don’t pay the doc like here, even better 😉

Thanks. I just wanted to air my frustration in this movie 😯

  2. Winning the lotto is pure luck. And the height of absurdity is demonstrated by people (especially the old, 70’s and above) that God was listening to their prayers when they hit the big one. Geezzz, why didn’t he listen to you when you’re younger, hehehe….

Being healthy is a choice, it’s your body. Some people just didn’t care, que sera sera na lang.

Like that quote about “the brother in law”, funny!

If it’s not mine, I’ll drive it like a maniac too, hehe… I drive crazy fast in the “freeway” ONLY. But I do those things with my RC cars (gas and electric), at least I don’t get hurt just my pocket when buying parts.

    • TrueBlue – know what, last time I was in Vegas, an old woman who could barely walk straight, holding on to the slot machines to guide her way, sat beside me and she had a loaded casino playing card. Gosh, you wonder – I guess this gambling thing is really addictive !

As for the que sera, sera – very true and that attitude is mainly caused by lack of funds to get medical attention, esp back in Pinas. When things change, like you come to this country where health care is free, the que sera sera mentality is dimwitted , irresponsible thinking. Believe me, there are Pinoys here who are behaving like this.

Gone are the days that men would go to war to please their women !

Ken Block’s training video is really cool. Unfortunately our cars couldn’t be as agile as his turbo-charged and heavily souped-up rally car. That Subaru Impreza 2007 WRX STI is rated at 300hp – stock version, when you buy it from the showroom – it’s a beast. I have a 2007 Impreza too but just the SI street model but I have a blue Subaru rally jacket replica so I feel good 😎 I can just dream hehe 🙂

  3. ive never tried lotto.i think it’s easier to win in ‘jueteng,’ but then again they did not legalize it. :p

    • Flamidevil – you’re just OK bro. Keep your money coz the odds are heavily against you 🙂 Know what, up to now I don’t know how heuteng is being played hehe 🙂

  4. haha!my father got hooked to games like this. yeah, i figured all that you say..oddity, how true!:)

  5. Your odds will greatly increase if you have 5 years of lotto results in your database and apply the “bell curve” in your probability and statistic equation. : )

As for the health issue. I ‘m guilty as charge. There is something about doctors and hospitals that scares me.

As for the car; you’re right, it’s just plain awesome!!

    • Blogusvox – we can call that trending and I am curious to know if the distribution of the numbers that won, if it produces a bell or falls flatter. For sure some numbers may have won more than others in a 5 year aggregation.

I’m not a fan or hospitals and docs too, but here, your family physician requires you to go for a complete physical check up once a year and makes sure you are healthy. It’s for your own good plus he gets paid by the government for every patient he treats so I guess everybody wins 😉

  6. Watched the video in its entirety and somehow I feel dizzy now…hahaha!

I’m not really into Lotto luck. But you’re right: Lotto players can just dream on. 🙂

Despite her UN health insurance benefit, my Mom refuses to go to specialists, even after a possible cervical cancer diagnosis. Very stubborn. Dunno why. Maybe she’s in denial or something. As for me, I’m up for a check-up this Monday (I foresee another language barrier situation). 🙂

Nice to know you’re into movie reviews now. Will check out your new page later!

    Happy weekend, BW!

    • Jayred – i also felt nauseated with the smoke hehe. YOu won’t believe how many times I’ve watched this video man 🙂

Know what, it’s probably cultural coz I even see Pinoys here who don’t fancy taking the maintenance medicine the docs prescribe them ! Now that to me is schizophrenia to the max ugh 😦

Thanks. Hope you will have an idea of the movie before you buy it 🙂 Have a nice weekend too 🙂

  7. LOL i hear that physical exam crap all the time. i find it illogical really but maybe it does something for the psychology of the person – once he finds out he is sick he will internalize the sickness and be all sick but when he doesn’t know it he will go by the same everyday because he doesn’t feel a thing!

    • Prinsesa – it is indeed crap. I guess the proverbial adage ” what you don’t know won’t hurt you” doesn’t apply in this case

  8. Hmm, that reminds me, the last time I went to see a doctor for a checkup was some twenty odd years ago. At my age, maybe I ought to start thinking of getting health insurance, hehe 😀

Hehe, you really are a Subaru fan, aren’t you?

    • Sngl – well, you’re one heck of a strong ox my friend hahaha 🙂 This point came up when I came across a friend here who is pretty stubborn and doesn’t follow the doc’s advice, even the preventive medication being given to him. I just hope he does something, even going to the Chinese hebal store for an alternative cure 😎

Big time, except that the wifey is driving it everyday 😉 It tell you, it’s one dandy machine and its all wheel drive bails out my wife from the god forsaken snow on the roads here 🙂

  9. Got to read your movie review. You bet that it will not be included in my own personal 1,001-movies-to-see- before-I-die list.

  10. I know this lotto business is a big rip off but damn, I winners every week. wish me luck.

“Scratching my balls would have been more satisfying than viewing such phony and laughable stab at my tear ducts.”

Is there anything more satsifying than scratching one’s balls anyway ? 😆

That video is really cool. I didn’t realize I have no driving skills whatsoever 🙂

  11. Natez1 – you got me there with the scratching hahaha 🙂

Same here, Ken Block makes me look I’m an unskilled beginner hehe. See , the problem is he can abuse his car while we cannot 😎

  12. Lottery: A tax on people who are bad at math.

  13. Sidney – how true. I’ll remember that quote 😉

  14. Regarding health care, I don’t see some people’s logic either. Good thing that in my case, I take my cars for preventive maintenance and do the same with my own health. I would rather know what my true health condition is than spend my days guessing.

Love that video. I tend to drive fast myself but his driving precision was awesome, especially the scene when he was circling around that guy in a Segway. Very cool! 😀

    • Panaderos – “I would rather know what my true health condition is than spend my days guessing.”

we can live with denial on some things but not our health ! It is mind boggling to me that some people still refuse to see a doctor when they feel something is definitely wrong with their bodies 😦

Frankly , I never knew that that circling stunt around the Segway was possible hehe 🙂

  15. “…health care in this country is free, as in zero, nada, zilch…”

    pucha… dun inggit ako… maka migrate na nga… LOL…

  16. We government employees dream of winning the lotto too (and maybe buy the government… hrhrhr) but we don’t even buy a ticket… so fat chance. 🙂

  17. Haha, I like your two-liner about the review.

I’m not fond of raffles, lotto, etc. I’m one of those whose chances of winning is very remote. It’s so clever to compute for the probabilities!

    • Witsandnuts – my review is quite wacky coz i was quite disappointed with the producers capitalizing on the historic name to promote it. In fact it has a story of its own and just used Passchedaele as the title. The movie isn’t rotten tomato – it just has the wrong title 🙂

The odds are so low that people can waste a ton of money in their lifetime ugh… but then you’ll never know when lady luck strikes 😉

  18. When the economy was booming, I was a regular lotto buyer, a dollar per drawing. But since the economy went down the drain, I found myself saving all my dollars for something else. Apparently, I am the only one as sales for lottery have increased since the economic slide.

I have not had much luck in lottery and drawing.

I am one of those who are terrified to see a doctor. But of course I am a hypochondriac so……..

    • Ewok – very true that lotto sales have gone up since the economic recession. Sign of hopelessness perhaps or maybe some people expect the lottery to bail them out 🙂

My sis is a hypochondriac too but one day she decided to tough it out when she felt something was wrong and was she right. Suffice to say it was one of the best decisions in life that she did. Technology is so good these days that prevention and early diagnosis has a very high percentage of cure 🙂
