Last Friday my wife called me at the office informing me that when I arrive home we were going to Niagara Falls to spend the long weekend . She booked a hotel room for us and our daughter for 2 nights. Monday Feb 16 is Family Day holiday in this province, recently legislated, two years ago in fact. It meant that we will spend Valentine’s Day at the Falls. Niagara Falls being in our “backyard”, meaning less than 2 hours drive is like going to a picnic at a nearby park. True, it is a celebrated world class tourist spot but going to the Falls isn’t what you do here when you want something really cool. But I guess we are in a recession, the weather had been sucky this winter and it was an impromptu trip so the Falls was a safe bet. The good news is the falls is still there, vibrant and intimidating as ever πŸ™‚

Niagara Falls is an odd town. Half of it is in Ontario, Canada and the other half is in the state of New York, U.S.A. , separated by a bridge across the Niagara River. When you say you live in Niagara Falls you better finish it with a N.Y. or Ont. lest you forget πŸ™‚ Canada however got the better part of the real estate. For starters, the smaller American Falls is on the U.S. side and the much bigger Horseshoe Falls is on the Canadian side. It follows then that much of the action is on the Canadian side – hotels, Casinos, amusement arcades, tours, shops and restaurants. There are a slew of hotels and tours on the American side as well and people just hop over the bridge to visit the other side to complete the visit. Just be wary that there is immigration on both sides of the border and depending on the passport one carries, crossing the bridge can be a hassle. ( click on photo for more detail)

The cars are heated otherwise the patrons will freeze in winter πŸ™‚ It is also equipped with speakers and intercom.

All the pictures above were taken by my new little buddy camera, a wide angle Panasonic Lumix F-35. Boy, was I thrilled of carrying a camera that fit right into the breast pocket of my jacket πŸ˜‰ I’m just a lazy guy, what can I say? πŸ˜†

NICKELBACK – Photograph

Believe it or not, this section is really context of my post, about PHOTOGRAPH, a great song by Nickelback, a band I dig a lot, nominated in all sorts of musical awards 45 times and won 18. Not bad at all 😎

When I was a little guy I always wondered at those “forget me not” scribblings on the back of some photos in our family album. Little did I know that yes, we do forget people and photographs are there to let us remember them.
Β Β Β Β

The lines below remind me of my day dreaming moments when I was a young lad. What my parents wanted me to be and what they thought about me was secondary. I had my own dreams to fulfill, on my terms and not theirs.

We used to listen to the radio
And sing along with every song we know
We said someday we’d find out how it feels
To sing to more than just the steering wheel

Β Β Β Β

At some point we will have to go back to where we came from because it is part and parcel of our soul, our identity. Reminiscent of the cycle of life, that yearning of reuniting with the place that opened our eyes to beauty of life someday, at the right time, will only make our journey complete.

I miss that town
I miss the faces
You can’t erase
You can’t replace it
I miss it now
I can’t believe it
So hard to stay
Too hard to leave it

  1. […] The Warped Zone wrote an interesting post today on PhotographHere’s a quick excerptLast Friday my wife called me at the office informing me that when I arrive home we were going to Niagara Falls to spend the long weekend . 2. wow!love that falls!

thanks bw for the info about it, didn’t know that. now i’ve learned esp. the historical location.

    nice shot!

  3. The falls is much better in summer. There are so many things to do around the area.

That’s some freak animals and scary pics 😦 I love ferris wheels but don’t want to freeze in winter πŸ™‚

Nice song. I like the lyrics too.

    • Irrealis – agree. The place rocks in summer πŸ™‚

There were more freaky stuff inside Ripley’s – believe it or not πŸ˜†

      Nickelback rocks πŸ™‚

  4. Good info on the world-famous falls. I thought i knew enough about it but wasn’t really aware that it’s half-Canadian and half-American in geography.

In fact, I’ve got some Niagara shirts given from relatives/in-laws from Chicago.

    • Major Tom – I bet the aboriginal Indians of the past considered it as one territory, until the U.S. and Canada divided it.

There is also a Niagara-on-the-Lake, at the end of the Niagara river on the Lake Ontario side which is a great tourist spot. And of course, the Niagara-St Catherine’s region is a prime producer of wine. The world famous Inniskillin ice wine comes from Niagara on the Lake.

Chicago is almost as far as New York City from Niagara Falls πŸ™‚

  5. “going to the Falls isn’t what you do here when you want something really cool.”

What about going to the casino?

Nice photos. The song is rad. I like it too πŸ™‚

    • Natez1 – darn, I totally forgot about that hehe πŸ˜‰ Yes, there are a couple of nice casinos in the Falls.

Thanks. I’ll post more Nickelback songs in future posts πŸ™‚

  6. the falls look lovely. i hope to get a glimpse of it someday.

as for the sky wheel, i think i’ll puke. i love heights but not sky wheel high. i prefer roller coasters πŸ˜€

    • Mari – I’m quite sure you will visit it one day – on a honeymoon with your Prince Charming perhaps ? hehe πŸ™‚

Man, I’ve grown a bit allergic to roller coasters lately. They’re building them higher and faster these days !

  7. I always wanted to go there… but in the end it might be for another life…:-(
looks like you had a lot of fun !

    • Sidney – oh common.. I’m sure you can visit if you really want to πŸ˜‰ Yes, minus the snow and the weather cooperated a bit and was on the plus side during the day. But darn, I was prepared to frolic in the snow anyways when push came to shove hehe πŸ™‚

  8. I’ve only been to Ontario once and unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to drive down to admire the falls. You’re right in that Canada got the better end of the scenic deal, so to speak. πŸ™‚

It’s not an easy drive from where I am. Might take me at least five hours to get there. I’d definitely go one day. πŸ™‚

    • Panaderos – It takes me about 8 hours to get to my sis in Connecticut from Niagara Falls so I reckon it will be about the same driving time to NJ ? Hey, you got to visit the place man. You’re definitely long overdue ! Bring Sleeping Princess with you for a honeymoon one day πŸ˜‰ Who knows I can probably meet up with you at the Falls and buy you dinner πŸ™‚

  9. I always had an impression that Niagara Falls is only in Canada. Ignoramus. =) Nice photos you took. I checked your Lumix, it’s very handy! Most of the time, I prefer carrying my point and shoot, too. It makes life bearable. Haha. I liked that image of mad scientist. Parang totoo.

    • Witsandnuts – I thought the other way around so when I first visited the Falls as a tourist from Pinas, we only stayed at the U.S. side. Wala kaming visa sa Canada hehe πŸ™‚ But there are nice tours in the US side too. I was able to tour the Niagara NY power generation plant – it was very educational.

The Fx35 is quite small and I can clasp it in the palm of my hand. It is surprisingly 25mm wide angle and records HD quality video too πŸ™‚ THese are the 2 reasons why I bought it. Slight problem – the video max out at 2GB of memory so you have to stop and record again. But the SDHC memory cards are cheap these days so you can pretty much have one dedicated for video only πŸ™‚ Just remember to buy the Class 6 memory designed for video. Of course nothing beats the bigger camera but I’m a lazy guy and backpacking a camera bag for me is like having hemorroids hahaha πŸ™‚

  10. Ignorant I am. I always thought Niagara Falls is in the US and only the river that supply the water passed by Canada.

So this is what my cousin means about going to the US to shop on long weekends. They live in Ontario too, but sometimes buy things in New York because its much cheaper there, except, perhaps, medicines.

  11. Too many people sidestep the power of water. Even in bathtubs, some people drown in it. I’ve always thought many years ago Niagara Falls would just crumble and carry chunk of where it’s flowing. It’s probably granite or solid rock to withstand years of massive flow. It is indeed awesome and to add to my list of procrastinations, someday I’ll drive up there.

How many minutes (average) waiting to cross going in and coming out? Nice pics btw.

  12. Wow, I want to go there. If I’m not mistaken, the Niagara falls is where the robots of the 5-member superhero group Bioman emerge from whenever the machines are summoned for a fight with enemy monsters. Okay, you might not be familiar with Bioman, a Japanese TV show. Do the Power Rangers ring a bell?

It’s interesting to know about the location of the Niagara falls. I would like to see the horseshoe-shaped spectacle I saw everyday on TV as a kid, so now I know where to go. Come to think of it, how on earth did the Bioman robots travel so quickly from Canada to their masters in Japan? hekhekehek

Yay! for Nickelback. I love this band too, but my ultimate favorite song’s the mushy-mushy Far Away.

  13. That face of horror freak looks eerily like that guy in “Tales from the Crypt”.

Great pics bro. Man, you’re really working that camera aren’t you? πŸ˜€

  14. Blogusvox – that included me before I came to live here hehe πŸ™‚

It used to be really swell when the Canadian dollar was at par with the US greenback. We would go cross border shopping coz prices in the US are cheaper because they have 10 times our population πŸ™‚
Our favorite outlet mall is at Rochester, NY, about another 2 hours from Niagara Falls.

  15. TrueBlue – it is amazing how the falls withstood the test of time, with the massive flow from Lake Erie down to lake Ontario. No boats are permitted within 4 miles from the falls at Lake Erie because you might get sucked into the falls current – ay yayay 😦

The Bridge to The USA can also be crossed on foot πŸ™‚ You will see the official boundary at the middle of the bridge- a favorite photo shot πŸ™‚ I am not sure what the bridge fees are now. It used to be measly 10 cents from the Canadian side to the US many years ago. There is immigration and they check you out for credentials.

Hey, might as well visit the place in summer bro. There’s lots of entertainment, casinos included πŸ™‚

  16. Kat – I remember when I visited Shenzen, China about 10 years ago, they have that wonders of the world park where they show replicas of the world famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids,etc.. and they had one for Niagara Falls. The bus tour guide asked me, being the only Canadian among the 26 people in the bus – ” how much bigger is Niagara Falls? ” πŸ˜†

Nickelback’s Far Away is a very nice song. I happen to like it too. Many people don’t realize that you don’t need Michael Buble or Barry Manilow’s voice to make a great love song 😎

  17. Sngl – yep, I remember that movie “Tales of the Crypt”.

Hehe… i’m just having fun with the little camera. The HD videos are very dandy too πŸ™‚

  18. I passed the board exam!!! BW, I made a vow that I won’t post a comment until I have already passed the exam. And now I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Richmond – no wonder your blog had also a password on it πŸ˜‰ Judging from the number of exclamation points in your comment, you must be jumping up and down like a kangaroo hahaha πŸ™‚ Hey, congrats pal. I’m happy for you πŸ˜†

  19. Walastik!

  20. Noy – hehe.. I remember the Hinulugang Taktak.. as if you went to the real wilderness πŸ™‚

Yep, magandan yang Maid of The Mist ride, where you ride the big boat near the falls. YOu have to wear a raincoat else you’d be taking a bath πŸ™‚

Merong din sa foot of the American falls, where you take the elevator down to the ground level close to the falls. Libreng kapote and sapatos ( you have to wear it mandatory.) Parang balot lang lang sa paa and they laundry it after each wear πŸ™‚

There was an incident, a young boy who fell in full view of the people who were on the tour boat below the falls. The boy was rescued and he survived. Amazing how he survived the 6 million cubic feet of water that falls every minute 😯

  23. Nickelback? Lolo, Aren’t you too old for them? haha

    • Richmond – hey, they came out in 1996 and besides, they have 9 nominations in the Juno ( canadian version of grammys which isn’t shabby at all ) this March 2009 πŸ™‚ Their latest album Dark Horse released this fall is awesome. Besides, they’re a cool Canadian rock band 😎

  24. BTW, how do you pronounce it? Nah-yag-rah, Nee-yag-rah or Nee-yah-gah-rah?

  25. hope you enjoyed your vacation πŸ™‚

    • Tin – Thanks. I did enjoy. It didn’t snow and the sun was up giving almost the hint of the break of spring and driving around the vast vineyards of the area was exhilirating πŸ™‚

  26. “…True, it is a celebrated world class tourist spot but going to the Falls isn’t what you do here when you want something really cool.”

Parang Luneta Park sa pinas? (scratches head)

    • Jeff- exactly. I could have written that in my post hehe πŸ™‚ But I guess the only difference is that unlike Luneta which has a defined area, activity in this place has no real estate boundaries and evolves quite fast . There are resorts and entertaiment centers that came up in the outskirts in the past few years.

  27. I’ve always wanted to visit Niagara Falls ever since I watched Superman as a young girl (I was already a certified movie buff back then). πŸ™‚

Great pics! Seems to me you’re really enjoying snapping away with your cool camera.

Can’t view the YouTube video anymore because they removed it.

    • Jayred – let me know if you are visiting the falls and I would gladly show you around πŸ™‚

As for the pics, this is the first time I field trialed my new camera. Hey, I inserted a new video, not as good as the one they removed though 😯

  28. wow Niagara Falls…sa book ko lang naririnig yang pangalan na yan.kewl.really kewl.hope you had a blast. :p

    • Flamindevil – it’s a cool place to visit. You ought to visit it someday too. Yep, I had fun although a summer trip is always better πŸ™‚

  29. the skywheel is the coolest!

i believe niagara falls is one of the most stunning view on earth.

    • Dong – not sure how it ranks globally, but it is in the top 10 places to see in North America. Drop by one day bro and you will enjoy it πŸ™‚

  30. you know me, the falls is one of the places i want to see before i die πŸ˜›

    • Tutubi – hehehe… I’m pretty sure you will see it bro. It’s about 10 hrs driving from New York City. You can also take the Amtrak train up to the Falls. This is the train that normally plies the NYC – Toronto leg. The closest major city is Buffalo, NY. Toronto is less than 2 hours away. Many ways to get to the falls and it’s very driveable from the major cities in the Northeastern US. Spend at least 2 days so you can see a lot- guaranteed no less than 500 shots on your digital camera πŸ™‚

  31. Hahaha… of course going to Niagara isn’t the thing to do if you live two hours away. πŸ™‚

I didn’t have a good experience there… the raincoat I wore when we were on the Maid of the Mist stank like hell and and the stench stuck to my jacket. 😦

    • Toe – ugh, you must have gone there in summmer πŸ™‚ Those oily faced, greasy dehin goli guys must have worn the raincoat prior 😦

Grabe, pareho kayo ng wife ko, so very particular about these kind of things hehe πŸ™‚

  32. Heated ferris wheel? well, that’s one fancy ferris wheel. hehe.

Looks like that video has been removed due to copyright law. But I personally like their song “Far Away.” πŸ™‚

    • Wil – it is an all year round ferris wheel therefore its canopies are heated. It is rather tall , with an excellent view of the falls. At night the falls are lighted but I wasnt able to get the pic because i have to shoot through the canopy window and my camera didn’t have enough zoom.

  33. Feeling nostalgic ako. We visited Niagara in 2005 – took the Maiden of the Mist ride to make it even more memorable. You’re right, the Horseshoe falls was more interesting! πŸ˜€ Would’ve loved to see the falls at night, with all the spectacular lights. Seems like you have been to Niagara several times before…what with the majority of your photos not including the famous waterfalls… πŸ™‚ Didn’t know there was a wax museum there!

    • Kathy – well, you’re much closer to Niagara Falls now, only about 6 hours away πŸ™‚

Great observation πŸ˜‰ Yep, I had so many pics of the falls taken over the years. Darn, I should have taken a few front shots for this post but man, I was just so lazy to go to the falls view area 😯
