OLDER BUT NOT WISER

Last week I ordered a wooden filing cabinet with 4 drawers. I wanted a sturdier cabinet for my files that had been cramming into a couple of fully packed 2 drawer low-end steel cabinets. I was glad that the shop offered free delivery. It would save me the hassle to hauling up the cabinet upstairs, to my home office. One weekday night the delivery came and guess what – the darn cabinet was in a big box, still be be assembled. The delivery man was instructed to deliver the box at my doorstep period, no more no less 😦 I was disgusted but had no choice but to assemble the cabinet piece by piece at the room where it was supposed to go. The instructions weren’t bad and all the materials needed – screws, bolts, glue, allen wrench – were inside the box. No hammerring and nailing required, just a standard screwdriver to bolt everything up . I did the assembly one Saturday afternoon and I was finally wrapping up, inserting the last drawer into the bottom part cabinet, it wouldn’t fit ! I found out that I inadvertendly reversed a piece of wood at the very bottom. I needed to take out all the drawers, detach one of the sides of the cabinet so I can get access to the piece that was wrongly positioned. I did fix it and I was lucky the glue hasn’t totally dried up on the wooden joints. Man, I cursed myself for messing up such a simple step. I swear if I had a chisel I could have just cut the errant piece and couldn’t care less how the cabinet looked 😯 It was a real drag and when it was over asked myself – “self, how could you possibly bungle such simple thing you stupid SOB ” ? 😡

I hate it when I mess up with simple things but no matter how embarrassing, I would take it anytime over a major screw up. Nothing in life is risk free and I’m not about to turn myself into a recluse, holed up in a little cave so I can eliminate any danger to my existence. Like is about taking risks ,of being brave enough to trust your abilities, smart to recognize and mitigate risks when you perceive them. Last week I saw a 20 year old Asian dude accompanied by both his parents to the walk in clinic for consultation with his doc for flu symptoms. Common’ now – that’s frigging babysitting an adult 😡 When will he learn ? No pain no gain they say and in my opinion, what we are today is the product of how we viewed and handled risk and learned from the mistakes we committed.

YOU’LL GET OLDER BUT NOT NECESSARILY WISER

Here’s an excerpt from the book Rules of Life. We all seem to think that we become wiser as we grow older. Experienced perhaps but that does not exempt us from goofing up once in a while.Rule No. 2 – You’ll Get Older But Not Necessarily Wiser dispels the notion that getting older means getting wiser. I totally agree with the author when he says that ” wisdom isn’t about not making mistakes but about learning to escape afterwards with our dignity and sanity intact”. It is a nice way of describing survival – getting badly beaten but somehow finishing the 12 rounds 😉 That also means not putting a bullet in our head because we screwed up 😯 As one saying goes – mistakes are totally useless if we learn nothing from them. True, safety first would reduce the probability of making mistakes but it will also reduce our chances of achieving greatness. Ironically, life is all about the business of taking risk to get rewarded. Somewhere along the way, we are bound to make mistakes to gain experience. Now to complete the irony, they also say experience is a hard teacher because it gives the test first, the lesson afterward 😉

WHY THE MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO FIGHT FAILED

Boxing fans are aghast that the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight ended up in a stalemate. Hard to figure out how both fighters could muff a potential $40M payday because of PRIDE. Yep, PRIDE rules above everything they say. It started first with Floyd Mayweather behaving like he is the sole reason for the fight, when in truth, he is challenging Pacquiao’s pound for pound crown. His demand for an Olympic style drug testing, over and above the rules of the Boxing Commission was odd. It wasn’t necessary but then the Pacquiao camp agreed to a blood test after the press conference, 30 days before the fight and the day after the fight. When everything seemed hunky dory for a final go , Mayweather demanded blood test be done 14 days before the fight instead of 30. What’s with the 14 days anyways? Should Pacquiao win and gets tested positive after the fight and the win gets nullified, wouldn’t Mayweather get his zero loss he so cares for intact right ? Now, what’s wrong with that ? On the flip side, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has bad blood with Mayweather  because FloydM bolted from his camp when Arum was arranging for a return bout with de la Hoya a three years ago. Mayweather refused to fight de la Hoya again and was content with his controversial split decision win. The fight could have been an all time grosser but FloydM didn’t want to take the risk. He wanted to preserve his undefeated record which stands until today.  When bad blood exists between promoter and protagonist, expect a breakdown in negotiations, until one side agrees for the other to get the lion’s share. With bloated egos, both Arum and Mayweather will hold their ground till hell freezes over unless the other side buckles down in agreement. Now Pacquiao will fight Clottey on Mar 13 and Mayweather will fight Mosely on May 1. We will wait and see what happens next.

“In the end,” Roach says, “if we had given in on the blood testing, it would have been like giving Mayweather the first round. Why would we do that?“

It became a game (on or about Dec. 24). It became a game with kids drawing lines in the sand. It wasn’t anything special with Mayweather demanding 14 days. It was all about Mayweather bullying in my book.” –PROMOTER BOB ARUM

  1. Same here bro. I get irritated when I did a stupid mistake on what I consider a rather simple problem.

Yup, in the case of Pacman-Mayweather, it’s pride in the part of Pacman and cowardice in the part of Mayweather trying a face-saving maneuver not to fight Pacman.

    • I curse myself but then I console myself later on 😆

It was a clash of pride that prevented the fight to happen. When both fighters feel that they are at the top, they think that they can always get a good payday by fighting anybody. This one was serious money lost but I feel that Mayweather isn’t quite ready for the Pacman.

  2. Experience teaches us how to avoid the same mistake twice.. If I commit the same mistake, I’d be angry at myself. It also means I haven’t learned from it.

Mayweather carries a lot of arrogance simply because he is undefeated. He feels he is the draw, not Pacquiao. He still lives in his glory days of the past .

    • I have made the same mistakes twice believe it or not 🙂 But I was glad they weren’t that serious 😉

Mayweather isn’t the only undefeated fighter actively fighting these days. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Edwin Valero and Chris John are undefeated boxers. The difference is Mayweather is a 5 weight division champ and he’s American. Mayweather can’t rest on his past to claim present day greatness. He has to prove it. 😯

  3. Pacroid is definitely on to something. He will say no today but will admit so after his career is over, after he gets inducted into the boxing hall of fame.

  4. I hope I don’t make the same mistake twice especially with relationships. One hurt is enough for me.

  5. I apologize for this method of contact, but I couldn’t find any other means on your site.

I’m contacting you in regards to your blog and writing skills. I’ll get the to point of my reason of contact. Basically I like your writing skills and I’m interested in learning more about you and your writing ability. We currently have a small book project (rewrite a book) and we’re in the process of finding someone to complete it for us.

Please let me know if you’re interested and we can chat further about it. It can lead to other projects in the near future as well.

I look forward to hearing back from you in a timely manner so we can proceed with this.

    Chris..

  6. Come to think of it, when I was younger I loved assembling things and working with my hands. These days, I squirm at the mere sight of an instruction manual. Poor eyesight and laziness is definitely a sign of getting older, no? 😀

Older, but not necessarily wiser? Oh so true… you only need to look at our voters, haha. 😀

    • Instruction manuals are OK as long as they’re clear 🙂 Darn with this 4 drawer filing cabinet, it took me about 2 hours to complete… then I had to break it in half and put it back again because of the damn error 😡

Well, you can say that as the country gets older, the people haven’t been wiser – that’s for sure 😦

  7. I normally find trouble in (physical) assembling. Hence, when I buy from (usually Ikea), I make sure to buy in bulk to qualify for the free delivery and assembling. Haha.

    • that’s a real good deal if it is assembled and delivered. Assembling furniture is a nuisance for me hehe 🙂 Unfortunately here, it’s a do it yourself deal most of the time, unless you pay extra duh.

  8. wow a DIY cabinet. im good with jigsaw puzzles and maze and i remember when i was just a kid, i like to dismantle things and put them back again, so i guess im good with this. what i hate are cutting and sawing woods and using hammers and tool. i hurt myself most of the time.

    mayweather? he chickened out.

    • It’s amazing how these manufacturers design furniture for people to assemble , with kit included in the package. Not as sturdy as the ones custom made by carpentry shops but still OK.

Mayweather’s ploy was obvious. Now he’s fighting Mosley, a proven steroid user, for less than half the money he could have made with the Pacquiao fight. He blames Pacquiao when he was the one who was straying from the official rules and setting his own silly rules – not Pacquiao LOL..

  9. Ahmm, naliligaw ba ko? Anyway, that old scientist who never heard of shampoo once said “try not to be a man of success but a man of value”, is it relevant? =p padaan poh!

    • With regard to risk-reward, it doesn’t automatically mean financial reward. It applies to people wanting to finish university, those struggling to raise a family as well as those who serve a much higher purpose – like going on a mission work in AIDS scarred Africa. I think it is very relevant.

  10. I am no fan of assembling things either… good thing in the Philippines they do this kind of work for you (the customer).
Maybe that is the main reason why I decided to immigrate to the Philippines 🙂

    • that’s because labor is cheap in Pinas. I remember i was overweight with my baggage on a flight back and I had to reduce weight on one of my baggages. the airline folks called one of the baggage boys who promptly took a box and moved some of my items to it and presto – problem solved for 150 pesos 🙂 If it happened here, I might have to jettison a few items instead of paying $100 per pound excess ugh.

  11. Hate assembling things with hot passion!! But if I have to do it once wifey bought something to bring to life; I look at the picture instead of reading the directions, hehe….

The inside “scoop” I got from the VP of Race and Sports of all Station Casinos in Las Vegas was the Floyd/Manny fight will happen this September provided both F and M win their respective upcoming bouts. This was a coincidence audience with the VP Art Manteris when I sought him on several ocassions to get a refund of my bet which he won’t do. Casino rules are hard to bring down even making logical compromises. They won’t budge in.

    • Try assembling a new barbecue grill from the box. I knew someone who assembled his new bbq grill a couple of hours before his party started… didn’t quite make it and some of his guests helped him out 😆

Wooo… casinos are hoarding money to the max ! What if the fight doesn’t happen ? When will you get your money back ?

      • Granted there is half-million bet just in one of their casinos, they’re actually making interest out of our money. If you look at that ticket I sent you, the ending date is December 31, 2010, meaning the refund is given to me on January 1st, 2011.

Now, if Art agreed with my compromise two weeks ago to move my boxing bet to yesterday’s NFL game, my money is puff, gone with the wind as I would have bet on the Colts. For now, that bet is free money for me, hehe…..

  12. Templar’s book is very inspirational which is my guide to enjoy life. I personally wrote him about my fascination with his book and he replied positively with my comments. I even shared to him my own simple rules in life as inspired by his book:

New outlook in life for the Year of the Rat

I havent updated it since I posted it two years ago but hopefully I will continue to complete my own rules.

Sorry, Im not interested about Pacquiao story!

    • Nice to know that you have directly communicated with Templar. I also have his Rules of Love, and Rules of Parenting that I gave to my wife hehe 😉

No problem… Just wait for the news of Pacquiao’s victory 🙂

  13. i totally subscribe to that rule of getting older but not wiser. i am a perfect example of that rule and i need not look far to prove that 🙂

i hate assembling furniture, it’s better to buy at antique/used/second hand stores, when everything is ready to go 😦

    • As time goes on, sometimes I realize how silly I was in the past 🙂

True. I don’t mind if it electronics stuff, I’d burn the midnight candle working on it but with furniture, yikes I’m just forced to do it 😯

  14. I’m fond of DIY things. So long as I have the right tools and equipment, I can do a lot of things like tinkering with motorcycles, bicycles, electronic gadgets, assembling furniture, etc. When you make a slight mistake in assembling furniture, that is acceptable provided that is not your line of expertise. What is not acceptable is when one makes mistake in his trade.
I grow old but not necessarily wise. As for physical, I now feel like I’m getting clumsier at things I used to do precisely. The only thing which is not affected (not just yet) is my driving skill and bicycle balancing.
I’m not so keen in boxing so I don’t really care what’s up with Manny Pacquiao. I am just always happy for him when I read his success in the newspaper the following day…

    • Good for you. That gets rid of the boredom. I heard on TV last night that people who aren’t bored and are busy doing things live longer than those who slouch up and get depressed.

Oh well, Manny makes $10M everytime he fights so good for him. To me its entertainment to the max, an admiration for the man’s superb skills. Dang, looks like I’ll be on the road when he fights on Mar 13 😦

  15. I am sorely reminded of myself and my failure to assemble a closet I recently bought—-I have an excuse, though, the instructions were bad. ^_^

I’ve lived on my own since I was seventeen and I’ve done plenty silly mistakes especially when it comes to householdy stuff–guess I’m just not housewife material. What I can be proud of, though, is being able to live independently, support myself, and learn so much about life and survival. I even had to get myself hospitalized one time and I also checked myself out. The nurses at the hospital found it so weird no one had brought me in and gotten me out. Relationship-wise, oh I can round up about more than ten people who’d say I’m not getting any wiser. Haha.

    • LOL.. maybe the instructions were from China, in broken English 🙂

I firmly believe that a person’s success in life is influenced to a very large degree by his appreciation of the virtue of independence. Once I attended a party at one of the houses of my wife’s co-employees and one co-worker who was in her late twenties, brought along her MOTHER ugh. OK, no BF yet so mom was the stand-in. She’s Asian so I guess it’s not much of a surprise 😉

As for relationships, all I can say is good luck. The prince will show up one day, believe it or not 🙂

  16. “Last week I saw a 20 year old Asian dude accompanied by both his parents to the walk in clinic for consultation with his doc for flu symptoms. Common’ now – that’s frigging babysitting an adult”

    — that’s how we are as Asians, but then again, a little self-independence will go a long way.

I once remember a foreign trainer we had at work and he laughed at me because I lived with my parents. Nobody laughed with him because 85% of us trainees lived with our families and it was normal.

    • My dad was one person who insisted in our independence as soon as we finished school. He taught us a very valuable lesson, one that enabled to define ourselves as we are, as we wanted to be.

FYI, here, if parents call the school checking for his/her child who is 18, the school will reply ” sorry – you have to talk to your child”. Somewhere along the way, people should start becoming accountable to themselves. Here is starts at 18.

  17. Hiya, nice day.. Your work is incredibly inspiring. I never imagined that it was probable to do something like that until after I looked over your post. You certainly gave an incredible understanding on exactly how this kind of whole system functions. Ill make sure to come back for more info. Keep it up!

  18. I agree with Roach. Giving in to the 14 day thing gives Mayweather a psychological win. Mayweather is using psychological warfare before the fight.
