A Day At The Banff

I was out on a business trip out west last week. I was back in Calgary again to do a project. Perhaps it is a sign that the economy is recovering πŸ˜‰ I’ve been to the city quite a few times but never had been to nearby Banff National Park, about 130 kms away, a pleasant 1.5 hour trip to the Canadian Rockies. Β  The reason/s were quite obvious – most of my trips were in the dead of winter and moreover, I prefer to make the trip with the family to the Banff. This time around my trip included a weekend stay and I thought of avoiding boredom and spending the Sunday at the famous Banff being early spring and the snow had already melted. I had already packed my DSLR camera backpack but at the last moment changed my mind because I didn’t want to carry 3 bags on the plane. I had my laptop bag and my carry on luggage and a third bag plus a tripod would be a nuisance. Besides, I was on a darn business trip and I wanted to travel light. So I took my backup camera, my trusty little Panasonic Lumix FX-35 , that if I had the time to trek to Banff, I could take photos and videos. Well , I made it to the Banff and took photos but somehow regret that I didn’t take my DSLR with me. Taking landscape pictures at such a special place without adequate zoom, lens filters, aperture priority and raw file output isn’t quite the real game. I went with a buddy who was with me on the project team to check the place out, eat , have a few beers, drive around and take a few snapshots and drive back to the city. Yep, I had fun taking pictures and not worrying about lenses, filters, tripods and settings this time around. Oh well, there’s always a next time when I could return on one awesome summer with the family , make a side trip to nearby Jasper and on to Kelowna, BC at the Okanagan Valley Β and take all the photos I want with my DSLR camera πŸ˜‰

$42 Million Jackpot Prize ?

Here’s one incident that could be the ultimate downer, the worst example of premature ejaculation in anyone’s book methinks πŸ™‚ A woman playing the slot machine gets an announcement that she won a staggering $42 million in jackpot prize, more than the published prize of $251,000. The casino management promptly dismissed the win as a computer glitch and the woman was told that she won zilch, dana 😦 . Out of good will and to cushion the cruel and depressive effect of the bogus euphoria, the casino offered her free meal and a night’s stay. Darn, would she have been entitled to some winning prize at least ? I say maybe a 10th of the $251,000 jackpot ? But you know what, casinos are the shrewdest bastards on earth and won’t give you a penny for free. You go in to be milked and not the other way around. Get on an extremely lucky streak and you would be whisked out of the premises by the security personnel. The computer glitch alibi – that’s almost an ace in their sleeves don’t you think ?

The Sunday I visited Banff was ironically the final day of the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament. I had the choice of spending the entire day watching the Masters or going to the Banff. The weather forecast for Sunday was sunny weather so I told me buddy at our Saturday night dinner that we’d be going to Banff Sunday morning. I had a Masters blackout the entire day and couldn’t care less πŸ™‚ For Tiger placing 4th in such a prestigious event full of the best in the world, after a 5 month lay off is simply astounding. The tabloids however didn’t spare anything when it came to Tiger talk. News about Tiger being a cheap date had resurfaced in the tabloids. When Charles Barkley many years joked about Tiger being cheap, such news are indeed surprising, given that he is the first athlete on earth that raked in a billion dollars in earnings. Mindy Lawton, one of his mistresses alleged that all Tiger ever gave her was a chicken wrap πŸ™‚ Well, we know that there is such a thing as a $5,000 hamburger – perhaps the chicken wrap was in the same league πŸ˜‰ These kind of news certainly doesn’t help the reconciliation with the missus. The sad fact is tabloids will continue to air his dirty laundry whenever they can and the missus will have to turn deaf and blind to such things if she intends to get back with Tiger.

  1. Banff is really beautiful. By the way, how are the prices ? Is it expensive ?

Come to think of it, these slot machines can be programmed not to give any money at all , LOL πŸ™‚

Tiger is in a real mess. I’ve read news that his wife is still making up her mind to get back with him.

    • Banff has its own unique charm. The prices aren’t overly expensive because it is low season these days.

You said it. We never know the mood of the these casinos on a given day 😦

It is a big time mess but the public has shown that it can forgive and forget as long as Tiger does the right moves.

  2. The photos are very pretty BW. What a gorgeous place. I wan’t to visit it sometime too πŸ™‚

It is definitely hard for Elin to take these tabloid news. I’m sure it affects her a lot too. Maybe she needs more time to forgive Tiger.

    • Thanks… yes, you should visit sometime. It;s not far from Calgary. In fact I saw a $10 shuttle ad from the airport direct to Banff and I don’t know what tyhe catch is πŸ™‚

True, it hurt the wife so much. Given enough time she can make her decision.

  3. Great destination and photos!

A few years ago, a Canadian Stewardess played the slots in Sin City and she won 10 thousand dollars…..lo and behold, it was actually many times over that amount, twas 10 million buckaroos!! Was she blonde?, hmmmm…true story but unsure if she was miss blondie, hehe…..

As I’ve said before, I don’t like TW one bit, but I want him to beat many of them, in particular Sergio, Rory S, Retief, Singh, Phil, Lee Westwood. Fred Couples could have won another green jacket but his very short game wasn’t there.

TW is an excellent futures bet for the US Open at Pebble Beach, pretty keen of that course.

    • Thanks..

Oh oh.. is that another one of those blonde jokes ? funny.. hehe πŸ™‚

Imagine if Tiger played a lot in the last 5 months – he could have won ! Hey, I’m sure you’re thinking of betting on Tiger this coming US Open eh πŸ˜‰

      • I’m a betting man, and all the odds are in his favor considering he won the same event a few years ago with a score of minus 15, and HE is the only player with a minus score. That says a whole lot.

Then again, futures bet sucks since the first two days are included, meaning he should make the cut first. The Goldman Sachs derivatives bet is more of a sure bet since they’re thieves, hehe…

  4. Oh Banff and Jasper are on the top of my lists of must sees. I’m pretty inggit with you πŸ˜€

Some places are too grand, too pretty that their grandeur doesn’t really translate on pictures. Is this the same with Banff?

I haven’t been inside a casino in a year. But each time I go and play the slots (I play the penny machines much to my bro chagrined) I always allot an allowance usually $20 – win or lose di mahirap tanggapin.

    • WE just rented a car and a GPS and everything else was on the house πŸ˜‰

I think Banff will be much prettier in summer coz there’s plenty of places and lots of activities to see. The drive from Calgary to Banff was wonderful though. I liked it a lot. It was a straight line through the rockies.

Same here, I don’t overindulge in casinos coz the odd are dead set against me ! 😯

  5. Wow! Great pictures. Nice place !

Casinos and prostitutes have the same thing in common; they are both trying to screw you out of your money and send you home with a smile on you face. ~VP Pappy

    • I happen to think that with the casino though, it won’t necessarily send you home with a smile on your face when you lose a bundle πŸ™‚

  6. that looks like a very good place! your photos are postcard quality. woot woot!

  7. – kainggit ung business trip… kelan kaya ako mapapadala sa mga ganyan???? someday soon… πŸ™‚

    – re: tiger woods, kasalanan niya kasi… he made himself too impeccable kasi and when people found out that he’s human and have faults… ayun… pinag piyestahan na…

    • hope you get one soon, at abroad pa πŸ™‚

Tabloids couldn’t care less about one’s hurt. All they care about is readership and money. Sometimes I feel that fhe so called freedom of expression we enjoy had gone too far.

  8. Great photos, actually! dSLR quality!

  9. the top photo is the money shot. i like it.

and yes what a downer! then again, casinos are like some politicians–they keep your hopes up, make you smile a little, and then forever regret the decision of electing them πŸ™‚

    • As for the first shot, I approached a hotel staffer outside the hotel and asked him where could I get the best shot of the hotel. He gave me a street address near town, drive up the hill for a couple of kilometers – so we went there πŸ˜‰

I like your analogy of politicians with casinos hehe… much like casinos, you’re saying they’re false hopes πŸ˜†

  10. Stunning images! You gave me another reason to visit Canada again! Very inspiring images to explore other places…
