Movie Goof-ups

There are people who make it their preoccupation to detect movie goof-ups and such is the author of the above video clip. Even Oscar winning movies aren’t immune to goof-ups but I think the bottom line in movie production is making these inconsistencies invisible to the naked eye. In truth the industry had been quite successful with their camera tricks except when goof-up sleuths perform their granular investigation and unravel the inconsistencies and discrepancies !

Here’s another set of goof-ups , presented this time on photos. With powerful photo editing software available to the ordinary folk these days, I doubt if these goof-ups are authentic – they may have been doctored ! I can’t imagine movie editors overlooking the Adidas logo on Johnny Depp’s pirate toque !

I remember watching a Pinoy entry to the Toronto International Filmfest many years ago, in the early 90’s. I forgot the name but it was a highly dramatic film ( subtitled in English) starring Nora Aunor and Lotlot. The theme was a mother (Nora Aunor) desperately fighting to pull the life-support of her comatose daughter( Lotlot) against the wishes of the wealthy and arrogant grandmother (sorry, the name had skipped my mind). There was the scene when Lotlot was accidentally shot in a crossfire between warring thugs in the neighborhood. The ambulance hurriedly took her to the hospital where she was operated on. The close up shot of the doctor trying to slice flesh to pull out the slug would have been OK if not for the fact that the flesh unmistakably looked like a slab of pork! The entire movie house burst into laughter much to my surprise and obviously, dismay 😦 The consolation was in the end, the entire theater burst into applause mode, with everybody clapping their hands for a well deserved bravo. I thought it was cool that a Pinoy movie made many non-Pinoys cry and gain respect for it’s overall quality 🙂

I remember the cheap budget spaghetti western movies in the late 70’s that had a seemingly incessant supply of glaring goof-ups , where people in jeans and modern looking houses were inadvertently shot. What can you say about goof-ups in Pinoy movies ? Do we even care ? 🙂

SUPER JUMBO’S MAIDEN FLIGHT

The highly touted Airbus 380 has finally launched its maiden flight, a 7 hour voyage from Singapore to Sydney. Singapore Airlines had managed to get only 455 passengers, most of whom paid their way to get a seat. Some paid the astronomical amount of $100,000 to be the first to ride this behemoth of a plane that has the capacity to carry up to 853 passengers. This is an awesome plane which I suspect could only land on the world’s largest airports. I’ve watched the 3 hour documentary on how this super jumbo jet was envisioned, manufactured and assembled and all I could say is I was in awe with the audacity of the people at Airbus who designed this plane and more importantly, made it fly. The various parts of the plane – wings, tail, fuselage were manufactured in England, Germany, Spain, France are were all transported by plane, ship, barge, giant trucks to the assembly plant in Toulouse, France. The last leg of transporting the huge fuselage to the plant was done by giant trucks after the load was transferred from a huge barge. The trucks had to travel at night as the roads were closed to traffic and the critical part was when it passed through a small French town, the huge cargo was literally about 20 inches each side of hitting the houses at the town square ! The engine ( 4 of them) alone costs almost $20M each and the catalog price of this monster is around $260M. Emirates Air is buying 55 of these behemoths – wow, does it have an airport large enough to accomodate all of them ? 🙂
