Movie Goof-ups

There are people who make it their preoccupation to detect movie goof-ups and such is the author of the above video clip. Even Oscar winning movies aren’t immune to goof-ups but I think the bottom line in movie production is making these inconsistencies invisible to the naked eye. In truth the industry had been quite successful with their camera tricks except when goof-up sleuths perform their granular investigation and unravel the inconsistencies and discrepancies !

Here’s another set of goof-ups , presented this time on photos. With powerful photo editing software available to the ordinary folk these days, I doubt if these goof-ups are authentic – they may have been doctored ! I can’t imagine movie editors overlooking the Adidas logo on Johnny Depp’s pirate toque !

I remember watching a Pinoy entry to the Toronto International Filmfest many years ago, in the early 90’s. I forgot the name but it was a highly dramatic film ( subtitled in English) starring Nora Aunor and Lotlot. The theme was a mother (Nora Aunor) desperately fighting to pull the life-support of her comatose daughter( Lotlot) against the wishes of the wealthy and arrogant grandmother (sorry, the name had skipped my mind). There was the scene when Lotlot was accidentally shot in a crossfire between warring thugs in the neighborhood. The ambulance hurriedly took her to the hospital where she was operated on. The close up shot of the doctor trying to slice flesh to pull out the slug would have been OK if not for the fact that the flesh unmistakably looked like a slab of pork! The entire movie house burst into laughter much to my surprise and obviously, dismay 😦 The consolation was in the end, the entire theater burst into applause mode, with everybody clapping their hands for a well deserved bravo. I thought it was cool that a Pinoy movie made many non-Pinoys cry and gain respect for it’s overall quality 🙂

I remember the cheap budget spaghetti western movies in the late 70’s that had a seemingly incessant supply of glaring goof-ups , where people in jeans and modern looking houses were inadvertently shot. What can you say about goof-ups in Pinoy movies ? Do we even care ? 🙂

SUPER JUMBO’S MAIDEN FLIGHT

news_pr_20070509_img01.gif

The highly touted Airbus 380 has finally launched its maiden flight, a 7 hour voyage from Singapore to Sydney. Singapore Airlines had managed to get only 455 passengers, most of whom paid their way to get a seat. Some paid the astronomical amount of $100,000 to be the first to ride this behemoth of a plane that has the capacity to carry up to 853 passengers. This is an awesome plane which I suspect could only land on the world’s largest airports. I’ve watched the 3 hour documentary on how this super jumbo jet was envisioned, manufactured and assembled and all I could say is I was in awe with the audacity of the people at Airbus who designed this plane and more importantly, made it fly. The various parts of the plane – wings, tail, fuselage were manufactured in England, Germany, Spain, France are were all transported by plane, ship, barge, giant trucks to the assembly plant in Toulouse, France. The last leg of transporting the huge fuselage to the plant was done by giant trucks after the load was transferred from a huge barge. The trucks had to travel at night as the roads were closed to traffic and the critical part was when it passed through a small French town, the huge cargo was literally about 20 inches each side of hitting the houses at the town square ! The engine ( 4 of them) alone costs almost $20M each and the catalog price of this monster is around $260M. Emirates Air is buying 55 of these behemoths – wow, does it have an airport large enough to accomodate all of them ? 🙂

  1. can we consider those silly song and dance number they had in those 80’s movies a goof-up? =)

  2. I watched the YouTube video. With so many takes in making a film — and breaks in between — these goof-ups are bound to happen. I can just imagine how hard it is for film editors to make the film visually consistent. They have to work on a lot of raw material, so to speak. Actually, it’s the job of the props and costumes people on the set to make sure that costumes and props remain the same to avoid discrepancies. But it’s hard because of the breaks, I guess. Pero with the “Toy Story,” that’s a different story. I guess pagod na yung mga animators saka editors. LOL.

Goof-ups in Pinoy films? Sa dami ng mali, one will notice the great shots instead kung meron, LOL. I once watched the Maggie dela Riva (sic) film. There was a huge painting used as a prop in the film with the artist’s signature and the year he painted the artwork: 1986 (or something like that). E di ba na-rape si Maggie much earlier than that?

But in fairness, we do have some nice films. I like the film “Pieta” with Ace Vergel. But please, spare me from those sing-and-dance sequence of Regal Films!

  3. Was it a slab of pork ? hahaha 🙂 That’s funny. Do you know what the movie was? I ‘d like to watch it 🙂

  4. If Sergio Leone produced and directed spagetti cowboy movies with Clint Eastwood, We also had the Pancit guisado cowboy movies with FPJ, Efren Reyes, Cesar Ramirez and others wearing McComber jeans, Custombuilt rubber shoes packing .45 pistols on canvas military holsters.

I used to watch mga kuwento ni Lola Basiang and Gabi ng Lagim on our 19″ Elitone BW TV and I remember one scene where a nipa hut was supposed to explode in a blaze of fire brought about by a curse from a very evil spirit. But when they cut to the miniture nipa hut to be burned, the tip of a posporo on fire was exposed along with the dirty finger nails of the props man. I guess they did everything live then or maybe skimping on video tapes or something that they did not cut that scene goof off.

  5. One of the well known goof-ups in film history was in the movie Ben Hur. In the scene where the Charlton Heston and — if I remember it correctly — the late Stephen Boyd, were on a death race atop their “ancient” chariots , a small red Fiat can be seen in the background racing along the highway. 😀

I also saw the three-part docu about the A-380 in the Discovery Channel. With the number of people working on the plane simultaneously, in different factories all across Europe, it’s amazing Airbus was able to pull it off — production delays notwithstanding.

  6. most of these movie scenes may have been shot days or weeks apart and sometimes the later parts were shot before the beginning and kind of hard for screen editors to spot subtle mistakes, but when an audience is preoccupied with trying to figure out the plots, kind of hard to notice the goof-offs.

A town mate of mine had the unenviable assignment to be one among to weld the carriers for Canada Arms for transport to the u.s. and he said it was an exacting job that a little mistake could damage the Canada Arm that could lift any weight in space, but is so fragile in the earth gravitational forces. And all the arms made it safely to be assembled with the shuttles and to think about the world’s biggest plane put together with parts built in several places just amazes even the experts..

  7. Emirates Air bought 55 of these humongous planes? Whoa! Who are they planning to transport? OFWs?

Like Noypetes, I saw many unedited blunders in old local films that were either ignored or overlooked by editors. But in the end, they didn’t make much difference, it was the entire entertainment value that matterd most to us young kids. And as Jayred had mentioned, with so many takes to do a single scene, and thousands of clips for the editors to go through later on, after a while, they all probably start to all look similar; attention to detail thereby getting diminished.

  8. I’ve seen Toy Story about a hundred times yata (blame my youngest son) but I’ve never noticed that goof-up. Actually, I’ve seen some of these movies and I’ve never noticed those things. I guess I don’t pay much attention to those details. 🙂

  9. Interesting goof-ups! I was laughing so hard. 😀 With the number of people involved in making a movie, it is hardly surprising that there would be mistakes like these. What is more surprising to me, however, is that there are actually people out there who watch out for these kinds of mistakes. I wonder if they are the same people who actually worked on some of these films, and so would know exactly what to look for? Hmm…

As for the Airbus 380…all I can say is, wow. I’m not to keen on riding it anytime soon (not that I would actually have the chance anyway)…I would consider maybe after it has made about 100 or more successful flights around the world. 😀

  10. Jeff – have you ever watched Indian ( Bombay) movies ? It doesn’t matter what the theme of the movie is – drama, spy thriller, war – ang hero at heroine laging may song and dance scene LOL 🙂 Believe me it looks really tacky subalit accepted na ng culture nila ito. And to think that India has the most number of movie going population in the world – that’s just their recipe so to speak and I don’t think it will change 🙂

  11. Jayred – if I remember, Maggie de la Riva was rapped in the 60’s pa yata …inconsistencies – happens every time but quite invisible to the naked eye 🙂 I agree with you that the quality of Pinoy movies have somehow improved and even the color quality has also improved 🙂
I remember saying to myself in the past – when is this Pinoy technicolor stuff going to improve ?

  12. Irrealis – you really want to see the pork slab ? Caution – it’s a real tear jerker so have some napkins around 🙂 I have got to get back to you on the name of the movie though hehe 🙂

  13. Noypetes – the pancit guisado cowboys at some point also evolved into black belted karate masters fighting the Japanese invaders with their McComber jeans and Custombuilt shoes hahaha 🙂

Man you remind me of those bw TV’s – Elitone and Radiowealth – are they still around? 🙂 With the bw, doesn’t every prop look fake, esp with the space scenes – everything looks like made out of carton LOL. 🙂

  14. Sngl – yes, I watched Ben Hur in the theatre which was a real classic in those days . I may have to watch the DVD and check out that Fiat car THey probably removed it already hehe 🙂

Wasn’t that Airbus 380 documentary awesome? Man, that portion where they tested the engine, where an explosive charge blows up a loose fan blade to prevent it from dislodging and hitting the plane was absolutely phenomenal !

  15. Vic – it’s a little complicated when you shoot scenes on different days and assemble them later on. Inconsistencies will be there but for the most part it can’t be discerned by the naked eye 🙂

The Airbus 380 landing gear system was built by a company in Toronto. The Airbus documentary had devoted a few minutes on how they stress tested this seemingly indestructible assembly of gears and wheels – plain awesome !

  16. Eric – it’s either that the wealthy owners of Emirates Air have a stake with the Airbus company, or perhaps sub-lease these planes to other Arab airliners, or there’s just simply too much money in the oil rich United Arab Emirates – it could be all of the above . It’s one heck of an expensive purchase 🙂

Yes, the audience’s attention to detail is rather poor, esp in the movie house where there is no pause nor rewind. As long as the goof-up isn’t glaring, they wouldn’t mind letting it through the editing I guess 🙂

  17. Niceheart – isn’t Toy Story just a wonderful movie? Nothing to do with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as voices – I can’t believe I got so entertained by it and be a kid again hehe 🙂 I didn’t notice that goof up too. My daughter loved it a lot and chased Woody and Jesse at Disneyworld and had posed for pictures with them. 🙂

  18. Kathy – you bet there’s people who love to dig for these goof-ups purely for entertainment purposes ! I bet you sooner or later the industry may hire them to fix these inconsistencies – you’ll never know 🙂

Same here , just watching the documentary I was edgy when the 6 test pilots boarded the A380 and flew it for the first time – wow- that ‘s a pretty gutsy way to earn a living I though – testing if planes could actually fly ! I’d love to see it in the air for sometime before riding it for sure. I’d be content with the smaller but long distance A340 which at one point took me from Toronto to Hongkong in 17 hours non-stop 🙂

  19. i’ve seen plenty of them in movies. forgot their titles. 😦

i would love to fly in this huge aeroplane. I want to experience flying real flat in bed! 🙂

  20. I can’t wait to board that Airbus 380! ( If I can afford it :p ) A shame they have delays in the production…but I guess that’s expected since the orders are still pouring in.

I watched the film – *Lol* Tom Cruise being a perfectionist, was not able to see that? I guess if he had, he’d throw a fit and jump on Oprah’s chair. 😀

  21. Ipanema – the does Airbus830 look like a cruise ship with lounges, duty free shop, sleeper beds and full baths ! I hope they’ll not charge an arm and a leg for such amenities, considering the high volume of passengers they’d be carrying which would bring them more revenues 🙂

  22. Thess – the A380 would surely fly the heavy routes as well as long haul trans-continental flights. With the high volume of passengers it can carry we hope the customers could get a break in the ticket price 🙂

Tom Cruise a perfectionist – really ? I know he’s quite a demanding guy. At one point he paid a water park in the U.S. some $70,000 to close so his kids could play by themselves for a few hours minus the general public 🙂

  23. I remember watching Lito Lapid as wstern cowboy and an uncle asked me if i noticed how he was using a modern day 45 caliber pistol. And even if he had .38 revolver, it was amazing how we don’t see him reload—d3espite the number of enemies he had shoot down almost simultaneously.

On A380–I’ve seen a National Geographic feature on it and it’s amazing how huge it is where the inside is as huge as a huge ship. It’s amazing it could still defy gravity as that size and weight.

  24. Major Tom – modern pistols like the newer 9mm can sometimes have 13 shots in a magazine but you’re right, movie heroes seem to have an endless supply of bullets in their pistols hehe 🙂

The fly-by-wire technology relies totally on computers. If you recall in that documentary, the pilot can actually program the computer to make the plane turn turn left when you move the steering wheel or “joystick” to the right – LOL . It’s pretty scary 🙂

  25. Hi there…
