Human Lab Rat

I’ve always wondered how new drugs and medicines are deemed safe for human consumption. I know that such drugs are tested on rats, mice and monkeys but at some point they have to be tested and validated on humans before being sold at the counter! For a while now I’ve been reading these ads exhorting healthy males and females within a specific age range, to volunteer for the testing of new drugs, for an attractive fee. Would you risk your life for money ? They pay you thousands of dollars but what about the side effects of these new drugs? If it doesn’t kill you on the spot, what about its long term implications? Kinda scary thought indeed. But there are no shortage of applicants, especially those interested in making a few bucks. A curious newspaper columnist volunteered and chronicled his experience of being a human lab rat which according to him “felt like a relaxing, paid vacation”. Sorry, but not my idea of a relaxing vacation πŸ™‚ The idea of growing a third testicle or getting that eerie urge to jump of a cliff kinda scares me πŸ™‚ What about you? Would you take the challenge?

BLOGGING BLUES

I’ve come back from a short but enjoyable vacation for over a week now and I’ve been having this inexplicable blogging blues – aka blogging laziness πŸ™‚ Not sure what it is – probably the wonderful spring weather πŸ™‚ The other night – Monday actually, I had prepared my post at the office, emailed it to my personal email address so I could cut and paste it to my blog when I get home. I penned down my one paragraph prediction on the American Idol finals and wanted to post it that night. For some reason, I got glued on the TV and had to finish the darn movie. It finished at almost 12am and I felt a little sleepy so I vowed to post it Tuesday night, right after the Idol show. It had to be Tuesday night because Wednesday night is judgment day for the week and one contestant would be booted out ! After the Tuesday Idol show which ended at 9pm EST, I watched another program for an hour and unexpectedly fell asleep at the couch, still in my office attire and woke up at 4am! Darn, I only drank a single can of Coors light – no reason for me to pass out, LOL πŸ™‚ I went back to sleep and woke up at 6am and did the usual routine of preparing to catch my 7:57am train. I gave up on my post and thought of posting it at a later date. It was either laziness or my inability to extricate myself from vacation mode πŸ™‚

On another note – aren’t you guys fed up with Idol judge Simon Cowell’s arrogance ? This stiff-upper-lipped prick has really gotten on my nerves! Did you see his lack of grace and selfishness when he couldn’t even compliment last year’s 3rd placer Elliot Yamin who sang what I thought was a decent song from his latest CD. His comment on Jordin Sparks singing the classic Shirley Bassey hit ” I Who Have Nothing” as old fashioned and should not be sang by a 17 year old was equally preposterous. A classic song can be sung by ANYONE. He was only looking at what kind of songs Jordin Sparks would sing when she cuts her CD and not her singing skills and delivery on stage. So much with this ignorant jerk who I think had gotten the ire of a lot of viewers. Believe me, time will come when people will vote against Cowell’s choice just to prove him wrong.

Anyways, here’s my prediction which I should have posted on Tuesday night which turned out to be true with Melinda Doolitle leaving. The final outcome remains to be seen :

Let me hazard a guess here . It’s going to be a toss up between Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis. The idol default profiles, including prejudiced biases are definitely on their side. Melinda Doolittle rocks but she ain’t got the wow factor baby. Unless she performs so magically and flawlessly, that America sees a reincarnation of Aretha Franklin or Ella Fitzgerald in her, she’d be out of the door Wednesday night. I think Jordin Sparks wins hands down.

Speaking of Idols, here’s Eva Avila, Canadian Idol ’06 – a goddess from Gatineau, Quebec who is trilingual , speaks French, Spanish and English fluently, singing at the finals with the song that she eventual recorded. Absolutely no shortage of star qualities from this 19 year old warbler.

  1. I think, if I really need the money for a cause that is worth the sacrifice of my life – then I may volunteer as drug testing subject.

I go for Jordin. Di naman magaling si Blake. Sayang si Melinda, but then, you are right – she lacks that star quality, though I was just hoping she would land second, at least.

BW, good to see you posting again. πŸ™‚

  2. hey Big Bro! I missed you in the blogosphere πŸ™‚

Anyway regarding the drugs and being a guinea pig…uhhhmmmm we’re talking about how much here? I’m gonna volunteer someone wahahaha akala mo ako noh? hrhrhr that’s kinda scary…what if I’ll go mental with the drug or something, di ba?

As for Melinda. I agree with you. It is still showbusiness. I also think Jordin will win this one πŸ™‚

  3. Know what? I forgot to post my 2 cents on Elliot Yamin! LOL, nagmamadali kasi so I forgot, πŸ˜€ Anyways, I was going to write about his appearance last night. I swear if he hadn’t been introduced as Yamin, I wouldn’t have recognized the guy, especially with those curly locks. πŸ˜€

As for being a lab rat, why not? If I’m desperate enough, and if it pays well…

  4. I know somebody who volunteered to be a guinea pig in California for USD6,000. He said, it was like a grand vacation. The testing of the new drug took around three weeks.

    ***

Naku, I only get to watch CNN and BBC shows here. The rest of the channels are all in German, French and Italian. And I have no patience to watch shows that give me a migraine headache. πŸ™‚ But I have heard of this Simon. My sister hates him. LOL.

    Welcome back, BW!

  5. Wow man I like your post on drugs.
Yeah, I was a guinea pig for a govt. drug test in the 60’s and wow man! I love the loooooong lasting side effects of it whatever it was they made me take. All I can remember is it was just a few drops of a clear liquid and man I still see colors now! Heavy man, they never paid me nothing but I’m cool with it. I volunteered again for another drug manufacturer a couple of years back and I love the 4 hour plus erection side effect I got from the pill they gave me…except for the sore right arm from you know, the male reaction and instinct with erections after several partners gave up on my erectile stamina? Oh man what a trip this whole business of volunteering for drug tests.

  6. Rhodora,

They say that if Melinda only looked like Sanjaya she could win it all, LOL πŸ™‚ Melinda
incidentally is 29 years much like Taylor Hicks who won last year. She’s very experienced having done stints as a back-up singer in bands.

Thanks… I’m having time to blog now. πŸ™‚

  7. Verns,

Yeah, I’ve got about a hundred pics in my last vacation albeit short and as usual, am having a hard time choosing a few for the blog πŸ™‚

This particular ad pays $4,500 for the 3 week testing. Not bad eh? That’s like P202,000 πŸ™‚ You can visit here and do the test and take home the money LOL πŸ™‚

  8. Sngl –

How about Elliot Yamin ha? Nice sparkling new white teeth ( about $700 to do a single tooth- not postiso of course) and curls and you can’t recognize him! He’s great review of his new CD. I was incensed when Cowell was asked – what do you think of Elliott’s song and he raised his shoulders with a marked stolid gesture and said , OK with no feeling whatsoever. I bet you this guy’s head is getting bigger because no one puts up with him coz he’s one of the producers of the show.

Hey if you do all the tests in the ads they’re worth about 10 grand. Not bad eh?

  9. Noypetes – I guess the tests you did many years ago was quite harmless since you didn’t get a third testicle hehe πŸ™‚ 4 hours ? LOL.. That’s too long bro. I bet you can’t go anywhere with the prolonged flag ceremony πŸ™‚ And I can’t blame your sore right arm for attempting to put down the flag haha πŸ™‚

  10. I love that Eva Avila, too. And looking back at this video, you could already tell that she’s a winner. And now I understand why Melinda was voted out. She doesn’t have Eva’s confidence and presence on stage.

I guess you are also right about Simon Cowell. People are starting to hate his arrogance and will vote against his favourites.

  11. It’s good money though and you might say, a good come on despite the risk. I wonder why it is not as prevalent here in our country. Siguro wala masyadong drug companies dito na nagtetest.

I was thinking na mabuti na ito kesa yun mga nagbebenta ng organs. I think this ain’t as morbid or as dangerous.

But as for me, I cant imagine myself taking uncertain drugs. I wont even take prescribed medicines thinking how it could make me drowsy or affect my organs inside my body.

Bout Simon Cowell, yeah he was so mean. Maybe he is just tired and lazy and maybe its time he should rethink his options. If he gets too grumpy like this despite the live audience, he should stop being an Idol judge and find some other thing to do.

It is so bad for the audience and he might be emulated wrongly.

Mr. Cowell is so misbehaving in a huge way these days.

  12. Haha… a third testicle in exchange for a paid vacation… funny! πŸ™‚ No, I would never risk my life for money.

I was rooting for Melinda… kainis that she got booted out.

  13. A third testicle would be a plus for sperm donors but a hassle between your legs during a morning jog.

  14. with the amount of drug testing going on continuously by different drug makers in the country, and the rate of adverse effects, we can say that it is quite safe. and the monitoring is quite extensive. but even with drugs already approved for safe use for very long time, lack of proper screening will sometimes prove fatal.
I’m could not make it anyways, because at the moment, I am a walking drug store. too many RXs.

  15. as guinea pig? no thanks….baka ang side effect nun eh sumobra ganda ko..i dont like showbiz, sawa nako sa ganyan!..hehe..

about the american idol, we cant see it here, but we have the german version of it…and honestly, all the winners they got here aren’t really good for my taste.

  16. Niceheart – absolutely no doubt that if Melinda Doolittle had better personality, she would not have been eliminated:) I guess part of it would be that Jordin Sparks isn’t a pushover either. When you got two contestants with almost equal talent, in this business the prettier person always wins πŸ™‚ I like Eva Avila too and the Canadian 05′ Idol Melissa O’Neil from Calgary who was Chinese-Canadian ( mom was Chinese).

  17. Major Tom – can be quite scary when you think that something might happen to you but as Vic says, it’s gotten safer these days. But then the question is – what’s the purpose of the test? To figure out if there’s a problem with the drug? Ouch..

If you watched Larry King’s interview of Simon Cowell on CNN, you will know that this guy packs some arrogance. Perhaps because he made a windfall of a fortune of bringing the Idol program to the States and sunsequently, all over the world, from where it started – in London. The guy is filthy rich and he’s accused of being a cheapskate by not disclosing his donation to the Idol charity drive. I am also aghast at how he pets and abuses Paula Abdul. Remember that “rolling eyes” captured on TV when contestant Chris Richardson spoke about the Virginia tech massacre on stage. He got heat for his arrogant action.

  18. Noypetes – depends on where the third testicle grows LOL πŸ™‚

  19. Curacha – baka nga maoverdose at biglang naging new creation hehe πŸ™‚ German Idols you mean ? Wow. This Idol contest seems to be all over the world now.

  20. lol…what happened to my comment? When I posted there were only 3. Or I didn’t type? Can’t remember now, just check ur logs the day you posted this. πŸ™‚

    Anyway,here it is.
    —-

You are right in your observation that people who subject themselves as human lab rats don’t know the effects. They thought everything will be positive.

Remember the elephant man? A famous big pharma co. tested drug T—– [forgot the name, it’s buried in my posts last year] in the UK. Now facing several suits.

Most of them are young. Two died in the process. Others with malfunctioned organs, etc. The elephant man as they call him is a young expat studying in the UK. He was ecstatic mentioning the money he’ll receive never thinking that he’ll never be the same again. Pity.

    Welcome back. πŸ™‚

  21. you know, melinda vs jordin sana mas ok. atleast they are the “belter singers” pareho ang genre.

blake is not the birit type. mukhang jordin mananalo. pero sisikat silang 3.

  22. i go for jordin…

  23. Ipanema – don’t know what happened to your post. Looks like Blogger is acting up again !

That’s pretty tragic when you hear of people die with these tests. They’re literally guinea pigs in tha they’re misfortune affords science to figure out how safe the drug is before selling them to the general public. The sad news is before the testing these folks are likely to sign a waiver that says if something happens to them, the drug company will not be liable for it:(

  24. Rheiboy – Melinda vs. Jordin would have be great but Jordin as way too much better looks than Melinda. Jordin vs Blake I feel is the more even match. Both are young and contemporary – both in appeal and style. Melinda vs Lakeshia would have been a square match I think which could end up either way.

  25. The Philosophical Bastard – I go for Jordin too but considering the crazed Blake fans, esp the younger girls, there is always that possibility of an upset πŸ™‚

    Thanks for dropping by.

  26. welcome back ;p
about the human “lab rat”, if it was “outsourced” in the philippines, it’ll be a “career” by some people I know… he, he…

  27. Glad to see you are back… I thought you were on a one year sabbatical!

No thanks, don’t want to be a guinea pig!

  28. Jeff – for $4 grand of 3 weeks testing I bet you there will be lots of takers at home who would fly here πŸ™‚ Outsourced lab rats? LOL ! The idea of being a professional lab rat would be one heck of a movie theme as well πŸ™‚

  29. Sidney – being a guinea pig isn’t a very comforting thought indeed. Worse, they only select the healthy ones for the testing !

I’ve been relaxing quite a bit after my short breather and got glued to the TV lately. The weather has been great and the sun setting late and there’s just tons of things to do. I’d probably go on a a much needed hiatus one of these days, probably early next year πŸ™‚

  30. welcome back!

so will you do the challenge of being a human rat? hehe

i agree with you re melinda. but i like her. i love listening to her when she sings. and she’s really different now compared when she first joined.

  31. What I know is that in most drug tests, the volunteers are sick and they willingly take part in the experiment hoping that they will get healed. If I’m healthy, I won’t subject myself to the experiment unless they offer me one million dollars. πŸ™‚

  32. and you were right all the time. it used to be when good looks were a “bonus” in AI, nowadays, good looks are a “requirement” in order to reach the final 2. look at the recent winners. maybe, just maybe, it will be Jordin, then she will be the youngest AI.

  33. Tin-tin –

Heck no πŸ™‚ I’m afraid to have a third testicle haha πŸ™‚

Melinda is a great singer for sure but don’t you find her emotionless? She doesn’t seem to have that perkiness of the other women contestants. She just smiles through everything – good or bad πŸ™‚

  34. Abaniko – yes , there are tests designed to establish the efficacy of the drugs. When my father in law who was suffering from arthritis was here, an ad for volunteers for testing a new drug for arthritis was placed but my father in law being a non-resident, i.e. a tourist was disqualified. Agree with you most definitely – no tests for my healthy body – health is wealth !

  35. Sexy mom – BTW I love your name πŸ™‚ The good looks is now an important criterion because the AI’s do a tour shows of North American cities plus appreances in talk shows of David Lettermen and Jay Leno. The AI is a celeb first before becoming an accomplished recording artist so I guess looks is an extermely important qualification. Having said this, nothing really prohibits Melinda from becoming an awesome recording artist, if she is really that good. She can carve her niche in the recording business minus the AI status πŸ™‚

  36. i am not a willing and obliging guinea pig. that’s scary, bw. wouldnt take the risk. but you know how it is when people get into a situation, and you cant condemn or blame them.

blogging sometimes is tiring. it’s just normal to pick other things than blogging. it is refreshing to take a break.

  37. Bingskee – I know what you mean, that some folks are driven to be guinea pigs by force of circumstance, as in financial difficulty.

Yes, blogging can be tiring but for me it is the distraction effect that tells me to slow down πŸ™‚

  38. So Jordin won. And yeah, Eva Avila is great. Have you heard her latest single? I love it.

  39. You guessed right. She won! I happen to like her.

Thank God Simon wasn’t asked to critique Bette Midler’s performance.

  40. Leah – yep, it wasn’t really hard to figure out the winner between Jordin and Blake. The stats show it all . Viewership during the Tuesday and Wednesday finals was down by 7 million vs. Taylor Hicks and Cath McPhee last year πŸ™‚

  41. Eric – you saw how Bette Midler was grasping for breath too LOL.. She recorded that song some 20 years ago so I guess she’s entitled to some rust πŸ™‚ I bet you Simon won’t dare say anything negative to a diva like Midler πŸ™‚

Yes, Jordin won. As they say, if Melinda Doolitle didn’t look like Carding of the Reycards duet, she could have won it all hahaha πŸ™‚
