COFFEE WARS

For the next two weeks, it looks I won’t be spending any money for coffee :). McDonald’s Canada just announced that its java concoction will be offered free to the public for two weeks – all day, not just during breakfast time like they did for a couple weeks in 2009. It is a rather intriguing move for McDonalds which interestingly coincides with the 2010 launch of Tim Horton’s celebrated Roll Up The Rim to Win contest. People are excited about the prospect of laying hands on the 40 Toyota RAV4’s up for grabs and countless other prices from ranging from $10K cash, netbooks, coffee cards and millions of free donuts and coffee. This contest – literally rolling the rim of the paper cup to look for a prize – also covers the handful U.S. states where the Tim Horton’s franchise had expanded . The great part about the contest is you can go to the website and check the winners map where you can view the places where the major prizes were won. In this type of lottery, geographical distribution of major prizes is important. The contest is definitely not a ruse as by law, the franchise will have to apply for a permit and provide the odds of winning to get approved.

I am not sure what Mcdonalds is trying to pitch with their free coffee campaign other than to say that theirs tastes better than Tim’s ( which I kinda agree, somewhat 😉 ). Or probably lure folks into saying – “hey, you get free coffee so why not buy a muffin or chicken wrap along with it for good measure “? The free coffee still won’t stop me and my wife from spending an hour or so at a pricier Starbucks or Second Cup joint after our regular weekend dinner dine out where we can enjoy real coffee and healthier non-fruit dessert (if there is such a thing). At Second Cup I can browse with my netbook for 2 hours for free since daughter would be incessantly blabbering with her stories not allowing me and my wife to engage in a decent conversation 😡

As for the free Mcdonald’s coffee – sure, oddly enough,  it would be nice to pass by their drive through anytime and say “medium with milk only please” and not pay for it :). For those cheapskates who are thinking of taking their date for the first time to free coffee, I can tell you it’s as worse as paying with free coupons 😆

AFTER THE GOLD RUSH    PART I

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics finally ended with an awesome closing ceremony last Sunday. It was a proper and fitting celebration for a beautiful and gracious host city often touted as the most livable city on earth and a tribute to a country that did itself proud with the way its athletes performed and the way its citizens supported the once in a lifetime chance to showcase itself to the world. It was the sweetest success amidst the challenges of logistics, the fatal accident of a Georgian luger at a practice session, the unpredictability of mother nature itself and the ever lingering concerns of a wicked recession. In the end, 14 gold medals, the most ever in the history of the winter games, and being 3rd in the overall medal count, not to mention the overwhelming attendance and healthy TV viewership were testaments to an astounding success. As one fan said on TV – “I don’t care about how many medals we win. I only care that we win gold in hockey“. That probably sums up the mind of a typical Canadian you would rub shoulders with during the games. It sure happened – the men and women hockey teams bagged gold. The jubilation was felt all over the country as an amazing 80% of the population watched the men’s hockey finals . This country simply lives and breathes hockey, a game they are proud to call theirs.

ENGAGEMENT

They came and watched to support the games and buoyed up the spirits of their athletes to excel. Nothing gives an athlete more adrenalin than a supportive crowd cheering to the top of their lungs, waving the country’s flag. More than anything, it is the support of the local folk that will make or break the games. As Sebastian Coe, a decorated British Olympian who is heavily involved with organizing the London 2012 Summer Olympiad said :

“We will never see a games like Beijing again,” Coe said. “That’s not typical of the way games are going to be delivered. You take from Beijing the extraordinary obsession with detail and eye for delivery. You take from Sydney the party atmosphere and here the party atmosphere and engagement. These are all things you need to bring together for a games.”

“Not since Sydney have I seen a city embrace the games the way they’ve been embraced here,” Coe said. “My gut instinct is that is what these games will be remembered for. I haven’t been anywhere where there’s been an empty seat in the house. And the people look like they want to be there.”

Unfortunately, much that I would love to watch the games live, I live 3 time zones away and the games schedule was too close to the March break vacation. I have been to Vancouver many times on long business trips and I pride myself of being able to hope in to a rent a car and drive around the city without a GPS and I showed off to my wife when I brought her there to tour the city when we didn’t have a baby yet 🙂 Speaking of the Olympics, Toronto lost its bid to host the Summer Olympics twice – to Atlanta in 1996 and Beijing on 2008. It’s hosting the Pan Am games in 2015 and plans to bid for the summer games of 2020 and 2024. I hope it wins one of them. I’d be thrilled and in fact I am prepared to sign up as an unpaid volunteer. Being there to savor the moment of such a prestigious event in my own backyard is good enough for me 🙂

  1. Luv to win a Rav 4. Free coffee is really cool 🙂

The kids are so cute and funny haha 🙂 I enjoyed the olympics a lot especially the figure skating. Congratulations to Canada for a job well done !

    • good luck.. hope you win !

Figure skating is cool but I like the ice dance because of it is more exciting 🙂

  2. only 2 weeks free coffee ? One month would be awesome.

The games was great. The hockey game was one of the best I’ve watched in a long time. The death of the Georgian luger was really sad though. The weather was shitty but it turned around halfway.

    • if it’s one moth we will be all caffeine drunk hehe 🙂

the drama for such a well publicized game, going to overtime was great. you couldn’t ask for more. I was really glad the weather turned around rather nicely 😉

  3. the most watched hockey game in history was the final game between USA and Finland , 1980 winter games at Lake Placid, NY which USA won.

  4. i like and don’t like mcdonald’s coffee at the same time. i like that it’s sweet, i don’t like that it’s too sweet and that the coffee taste was overpowered by sweetness – definitely not for the real hardcore coffee drinkers. but i always get it $2.99 for the large cup – wish they would offer free cups here too (jealous).

i watched that gold medal hockey game and was proud for both teams. it’s just right that canada won it, talent aside, because hockey means a whole lot more to canada than it will ever be here on this side of the border.

    • McDonalds say their coffee is premium roast. Here you can get them black or ask to put milk only and you can add sugar to it.

I know… I was just imaging what if Canada lost, the flag would go half mast haha 🙂

  5. In Manila there is free WiFi in most coffee shops… it would be great to have a free coffee with that… and to make it perfect I hope they could add a free croissant in the package !
I will be their eternal suki !

  6. I’d like to see how long the line is for that free coffee.

Didn’t watched the winter games at all, but was going to watch the hockey finals…only if my bet was on. Was half hour late and would have lost since you know where my wager was, hehe…..

    • it’s not too long only at breakfast time esp at the train station where I pass by every morning. I heard they’ve restricted the size to small now and only 1 per person 🙂

      Good you didn’t bet 😉

  7. free coffee? how i wish the local franchises do the same here ;P

  8. McDonald’s Canada just announced that its java concoction will be offered free to the public —- kelan yan mangyayari sa pinas? =)

I’m one BIG coffee addict and I can’t start my day without coffee.

    • The free coffee goads people to eat at McDo because a free hot coffee after a meal is a great option. Same here, I expect fresh brewed coffee at the pantry everytime I arrive at the office. Instant coffee doesn’t cut it for me though. I always prefer brewed, even at home.

  9. Okay lang yang coffee war, as long as the consumers benefits from it. >: D

Oo nga pala, kakatapos lang ng Olympics dyan sa inyo. I’ve never been to one and I don’t think any of these Middle Eastern countries will try to bid in any Summer Olympics in the near future.

    • It definitely benefits the public but there is also a perceived benefit for McDo. It’s a pretty gutsy advertising move 😯

I think Qatar recently hosted the Asian Games. As far as I know the both the Summer and Winter Olympics rove the continents every 4 years. I’m sure the Middle Eastern countries have lots of dough to spare and I’ll not be surprised if it wins the bid after the Rio de Janeiro 2016 summer games.

      • You’re right. Doha sponsored an Asian Games. Pero its not as competetive and exciting as an Olympic games. Sa Asian, alam mo na kung sino-sinong bansa ang hahakot ng medals.

        • Infrastructure, access to the country and support of the population are the key ingridients in winning a bid. Safety and political stability is also of paramount concern of the IOC to award the games. Officials visit the country and conduct a through inspection. Vancouver had to spend billions in constructing a light rail transit from the airport to the city to convince the IOC that it can support the games. It’s pretty serious business 😯

  10. The winter games isn’t much of a big deal in tropical Asia (although it is shown on some cable channels), and it stems from the fact that almost all of the events, save perhaps for figure skating, are largely unknown in these parts. Like ice hockey for instance, I bet a big number of viewers will likely end up scratching their heads, while trying to figure out why two opposing teams would wanna bash each other’s brains out with a wooden stick, hehe. 😀

Coffee for a chance to own a RAV 4? Now I wish someone would bring in a Tim Horton’s franchise in Pinas… 😀

    • I think figure skating and speed skating are the main draws. To see Hongkong, Ghana and Jamaica field one 1 athlete each for the winter games was pretty odd but hey, they got full sponsorship from their respective countries !

I’m thinking of bringing it there hehe 🙂

  11. I think its my first time here.. Where’s the free coffee? LOL, pag may winter sa pilipinas malamang may tumbang preso sa winter olympics, sa ibabaw ng yelo maghahagisan ng skates inaasinta ang lata. Hehe.

  12. Wow, what a promo! I am not a fan of coffee. But if there’s a promo like that, why not? I remember last year, some of Starbucks branches in Abu Dhabi had a free frapuccino/espresso promo. But for a few hours only. I didn’t know they had a promo that time, I just came there at the right moment. Haha.

    • plain coffee for free isn’t as costly as frapuccino or espreso hehe.. these flavored coffee are quite expensive in fact. If they give them away free for 2 weeks they might go bankrupt 😆

  13. I don’t drink coffee nowadays so I don’t think I would enjoy with such kind of promo.
We don’t have winter games here in ‘Pinas so I don’t know how much Pinoy would be enjoying watching such kind of games. On the contrary, being in the hot climate we have here now caused by El Niño, what I personally enjoy at present is riding my bike 70 kilometers on weekends under the scorching heat of the sun 😀

    • Ow, by the way, if I’m sure to win a Rav4, I might be forced to drink free coffee :p

      • hehe.. it’ll give you more caffeine to concentrate on your biking 🙂

You must have heard about the worldwide massive TOYOTA recall because the accelerator gets stuck for no reason at all ( deemed faulty design). Aren’t you scared ? 🙂
